A culture-filled community in 6th Ward

One of Allentown’s oldest neighborhoods, the 6th Ward is an ethnically diverse urban community along the western bank of the Lehigh River. Hairo Bueno, a local Realtor with Allentown City Realty, says many people priced out of big cities nearby, like New York, about 90 miles away, and Philadelphia, about 60 miles away, are relocating to Allentown because of its lower housing costs and urban conveniences. “They don’t want something too different. We’ve got everything you need here,” Bueno says. Located close to Philadelphia, people worldwide have flocked here for generations, establishing various local businesses and houses of worship.

Rowhomes on city streets

New office buildings and luxury apartments are poised to rise next to the river in the coming years as part of a new redevelopment plan. Both the 1st and 6th Wards are focal points of Allentown’s 2030 Vision, with plans to build more housing, improve amenities like open green spaces, and foster economic development. The Ward’s grid-lined streets of Colonial-style brick and stone rowhouses usually range from the low $100,000s to the mid $200,000s, while some newer homes sell for as much as $300,000. Most properties feature small, narrow backyards. Some offer enough space for rear-entry parking, while others only provide street parking. “You’re starting to see a lot of traffic. It wasn’t like this before. There used to be five cars on each block. Now, you can barely find on-street parking. And that’s just about everywhere in the city,” Bueno says. The neighborhood also garners a 7 out of 10 crime score, well above the national average of 4, according to the CAP Index.

Education in Allentown

The Allentown City School District serves the community, scoring below-average ratings on Niche. Students in the neighborhood may start at Sheridan Elementary School, a C-minus-rated school on Niche that was also recognized by the city in 2002 as “a Lifetime Property of Merit” for anchoring the community for over a century. Older students may then move on to Harrison-Morton Middle School, earning a C-minus rating, and Louis E. Dieruff High School, scoring a C-plus. Allentown is also home to numerous colleges, like Muhlenberg College and Cedar Crest College, about 5 miles west, Lehigh Carbon Community College, and Lehigh University, 8 miles east.

Riverfront views at Bucky Boyle Park

Within the neighborhood, residents gather at the Jordan Meadows, a public green space with playgrounds and hard-surface athletic courts next to a burbling creek that feeds into the Lehigh River. Along the riverfront, residents can enjoy scenic views of the water and amenities like athletic facilities and ball fields at Bucky Boyle Park. Residents can also spend their days kayaking on the river or enjoying an array of whimsical spray cannons and water features to cool off on hot summer days. Others can head to the community swimming pool at Jordan Park, also home to a skatepark and creekside trails. Rainy days lead to movies at A little farther up the river, the sight of construction and heavy-duty vehicles outline where a brand-new riverfront plaza and multi-use development will soon provide new places for people to live, work and play.

Flavors from around the globe

There are tons of flavors to explore in the 6th wards as people from across the globe have opened restaurants and eateries here for years. At Da Judah’s Kitchen, Chef Tina is known for authentic African dishes, including goat stew, jollof rice and egusi soup. At Damascus, Middle Eastern delights like kebab served with a streaming side dish of rice and creamy hummus await. Egypt Star Bakery, named after the Pennsylvania town, is known for its rye loaves, chocolate eclairs and crème-filled donuts. Elias Market stocks fresh produce and Hispanic and Middle Eastern-style spices and goods in the neighborhood. Supremo Food Market of Allentown is also only one mile away for a more extensive selection. Across the bridge, a short drive leads to retail stores like Ross Dress for Less, Target and Sam’s Club along Lehigh Valley Thruway.

Fairs to farmers markets

Numerous annual events are held throughout the city. The Great Allentown Fair is the largest event of the year along North 17th Street. During the fair, residents can soak up the last bit of summer with live musical performances, games, rides, and vendors selling everything from cotton candy to fried Oreos. The grounds are also home to Allentown Farmers Market, open weekly from Thursday through Saturday. Residents can spend afternoons perusing the halls at the Allentown Art Museum or catch a sports game or concert at the PPL Center.

Major roads and essential establishments

6th Ward boasts ample sidewalks and is less than 2 miles from the heart of Allentown. Numerous bus stops are scattered along North Front Street and MacArthur Boulevard. Lehigh Valley International Airport is less than 4 miles away along the American Parkway, while other major roads include U.S. Route 22, U.S. Route 145 and Interstate 78. St. Luke’s Hospital Sacred Heart Campus is less than one mile away in case of emergencies. At the same time, numerous houses of worship are clustered around, ranging from Slovak and Ukrainian to Hispanic congregations.
