Established neighborhood home to Amarillo’s first post office
Along the railroad tracks that helped Amarillo rise in the cattle industry, Glenwood is one of the most longstanding neighborhoods in the city. In fact, depending on how long someone has lived in the city may impact what they call it. Originally known as Ross Post Office, it was home to the city’s first and now main United States Postal Office. “It’s all the same area,” says Ann Riffel, a longtime city resident and Realtor with French and Company Realtors. “As the neighborhood grew, they renamed it Glenwood, but it goes by both names.” Today, the neighborhood offers multiple nearby retail options, including the local elementary school and community park with one of the city’s 13 splash pads.
Glenwood has several home options, such as apartments, mobile homes, and single-family homes.
Memorial Park is the go-to destination for many neighborhoods seeking a soccer game.

Ranch-style houses and bungalows from the mid-20th century
The home inventory in Glenwood has diverse offerings, but most homes were built between the late 1940s and 1960s. Ranch-style houses and bungalows sit back off the neighborhood streets on compact front yards. Most properties include a driveway to avoid street parking and offer a fenced-in backyard. Other housing options include affixed mobile homes and the chance to rent at a handful of apartment complexes. While some properties needing renovations can dip lower, most homes sell between $80,000 and $150,000. “The market is based on pricing right now,” says Jennifer Rosenbach, a Realtor with Amarillo’s Parkview Realty, who has been active in the city’s market for 15 years. “Potential homebuyers have more inventory to look through, so if it’s not priced correctly, the listing will sit.”
Many Glenwood homes are single-level brick bungalows with simple exteriors.
You'll find a few two-story homes in Glenwood that go for higher prices.

Inherent weather risk in Amarillo
Amarillo has consistently low atmospheric pressure, which, combined with vast open space, causes it to be ranked among the windiest cities in the country annually. The city also has a wide range of weather, including temperatures over 100 degrees in the summer and below freezing in the winter. It is also susceptible to severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, flooding and wildfires. While the neighborhood is not on the floodplain, FEMA encourages homeowners in Texas to get flood insurance.
