Hillside Terrace
Craftsman properties are well-manicured lots
Tight neighborhood streets are lined with sidewalks, making the Hillside Terrace community accessible by foot. Perched on nearly perfect manicured lots are Craftsman tract properties constructed in the 2010s, ranging between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet. Properties include covered entrances, fenced-in backyards and attached garages. Homes usually sell between $240,000 and $541,000, with larger square footage homes going for more. “Things are moving pretty quick here, especially if they are under the $300,000 price point,” says Chancy Via, the owner of Palo Duro Real Estate, who has sold properties in the neighborhood.Highest ranked school district in Amarillo
Hillside Terrace is part of the Canyon Independent School District, which serves around 11,000 students and gets an A from Niche, and the site ranks it as the best school district in the city. Children attend Hillside Elementary for kindergarten through fourth grade, Greenways Intermediate teaches fifth and sixth grades and West Plains Junior High School covers seventh and eighth grades. All three schools get an A from Niche. West Plains High School receives and is the newest school in the city. Through a partnership with Amarillo College, students who qualify can work towards their associate's degree while earning their high school diploma. “Most people consider these schools some of the best schools in the city,” Via says.Using The Loop to get around Amarillo
Texas State Loop 335, known locally as The Loop, forms the neighborhood's western border. The auxiliary highway encircles Amarillo and connects to Interstates 27 and 40. The Loop is also how residents get the 7 miles north to Northwest Texas Healthcare System, a teaching hospital or the 21 miles east to Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. Northwest Emergency at Town Square, a satellite emergency room for the hospital, is less than a mile away.Community park at Hillside Elementary School
Behind the elementary school, Hillside School Park offers a paved walking trail that navigates through its ample open space. The park also features a playground with a detached swing set surrounded by benches, picnic tables, and a hard-surface basketball court for pickup hoops games. For more outdoor recreation, John Stiff Memorial Park is a regional city park 5 miles north. While residents can find standard amenities like two playgrounds, there are also trails and fishing around McDonald Lake and the Amarillo National Tennis Center, which offers indoor and outdoor court space for tennis and pickleball. Preston West Golf Course is 4 miles south and is a public track with practice areas and the Bar 3 restaurant for a post-round celebration.Plenty of nearby shopping at Town Square
Town Square Village is a mixed-use development with multiple restaurants and local boutique shops just north of the neighborhood. The Village has fashion stores like Apricot Lane or 79 Salt, barbershops and nail salons. Residents can also find a handful of restaurants, including X- (said X bar) Steakhouse and Cada Vez Cocina Mexicana, or for entertainment at Cinergy Amarillo Epic, a movie theater and an arcade. Further north on South Soncy Road are numerous national brand stores, including The Home Depot, Target and Sam’s Club. This corridor is also home to the city’s lone shopping mall, Westgate Mall. Residents can pick up weekly groceries at a Walmart Neighborhood Market, Natural Grocers or United Supermarkets, all within 3 miles of Hillside Terrace.City Center Amarillo events downtown
Aside from the occasional garage sale, Hillside Terrace has no official neighborhood events. However, Amarillo has plenty of community activities for entertainment. City Center Amarillo, a nonprofit, hosts numerous events throughout the year, including the Amarillo Market, a farmers market, on Saturdays in the summer and the Electric Light Parade around the holidays. Sports fans can check out the Amarillo Sod Poodles, a minor league baseball team, at Hodgetown Stadium or check out an Amarillo Symphony Orchestra performance at Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts.Potential flood risks in the neighborhood
Life in the Texas Panhandle comes with some inherent weather risks. The city experiences temperatures that soar over 100 degrees in the summer and drop below freezing in the winter. The city is susceptible to severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding. Western portions of the neighborhood along Nancy Ellen Street are at an increased risk of flooding. FEMA encourages all Texas homeowners to purchase flood insurance. Some federal lenders may require it when there is an increased risk.
