Covington County's largest city with a small town feel
Though it’s Covington County’s largest municipality, Andalusia is less of a city, and more of a rural town center. “We’re all just like a huge family here,” JoAnn Peters says. A local agent with Clark Real Estate Group, Peters was born and raised in Andalusia. The city’s population is just under 9,000, and “everybody knows everybody,” she adds. “We’re all going to the same grocery stores, schools and ballfields, so you run into people you know all the time.”
Being about 90 miles from any major city, Andalusia serves as an economic and healthcare hub for smaller surrounding towns. It’s home to Covington County’s largest hospital and a 250-acre industrial park. In January 2025, the Governor of Alabama awarded the city a $400,000 grant to build a new manufacturing plant for Conecuh Sausage Co., which produces one of the state’s most recognizable homegrown food products.

Gently sloping residential streets branch off Andalusia’s downtown core. Midcentury ranch-style homes make up most of the housing inventory here, but some historic bungalows date back to the 1920s. The median sale price is about $190,000 in Andalusia, far below the national median.

Hunting, fishing and hiking at Conecuh National Forest
All kinds of outdoor recreation surround Andalusia. Two large reservoirs, Gantt Lake and Point A Lake, border the city’s northside. Both feature hundreds of acres of shoreline and public boat launches leading to the Conecuh River. “Fishing and hunting are a very big deal here,” Peters says. Conecuh National Forest is one of the most popular local spots for both sports. “They’ve got a couple of ponds just for fishing, and people go hiking and biking there all the time,” she says.
Multiple city parks and community centers have playgrounds, pools and ball fields for the youth sports teams. “Every year we host the Little League World Series for the area,” Peters says. Throughout the spring and summer, a local farmers market takes place twice a week at the Kiwanis Covington County Fairgrounds. “We also have quite a few big rodeos at the Covington Center Arena,” she says. The Andalusia Ballet Association performs downtown at the Church Street Cultural Arts Centre.

Local businesses surround Andalusia Town Square
Local businesses occupy the Main Street-style storefronts around Andalusia Town Square. Between coffee shops, boutiques and restaurants, hand-painted murals emphasize the city’s agricultural history. A grassy plaza in the heart of downtown hosts several community events, including the annual Christmas in Candyland Snow in South Alabama Event. Other local restaurants, fast food chains and national retailers are found along U.S. Highway 29.

U.S. Highways 29 and 84 are the two main roads in Covington County. Both routes run through Andalusia, making it easy to access the Enterprise and other small nearby cities. Two-lane state roads connect the local community, but residents may soon have a new way to get around town. In 2023, the city revised its comprehensive plan to make the development of pedestrian infrastructure a top-priority in the coming years.
