A self-sufficient spirit for 200-plus years

For 250 years, Anthony Township, Pennsylvania, has been just beyond the edge of local development. In the 1760s, English law banned Colonial settlement west of Lycoming Creek. However, dozens of Scotch-Irish, English and German farmers ignored this order and pushed westward into the mountainous frontier, a chunk of which now makes up Anthony Township. Beyond the reaches of Great Britain’s or Pennsylvania’s laws, these squatters, known as the Fair Play settlers, created their own democratic legal system 20 years before the U.S. Constitution was written. Today, this community outside Williamsport is governed by the state like any other township. Still, it retains a rustic, self-sufficient spirit. It’s home to farmers, hunters and others who live among quiet, rolling hills, miles from the closest restaurants or supermarkets.

Hunting in State Game Lands No. 114

The northern edge of the township borders State Game Lands No. 114, 2,900 acres of state-protected forests open for hiking, bird-watching and hunting deer, bobcats and squirrels. Just outside the game lands, Whitetail Mountain Lodge has hosted hunters since 1994. State Game Lands No. 114 is also surrounded by private sporting clubs, such as Corn Hill Fishing and Hunting Club and Elbow Fish & Game Club. About 9 miles west of Anthony, a few local sporting clubs hold the annual Shoot-Out, a shooting competition that raises money for local veterans through statewide nonprofit Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Inc. The Williamsport area averages more than 30 inches of snow every winter, and locals can find indoor activities south of Anthony. For example, Harvest Moon Lanes bowling alley is in the neighboring Woodward Township.

Shopping in Jersey Shore, Williamsport

Small farms around the township raise beef cattle and flowers. Bacon, eggs and milk used in the kitchen at Waltz Creamery & Farm House Café come from the Waltz dairy farm or surrounding farms. Located 2 miles from Anthony in the small borough of Salladasburg, the restaurant is known for its breakfast food and homemade ice cream. People living on the western side of Anthony can get some groceries and household items at Dandy Mini Mart in Salladasburg, but most shopping runs require a trip of at least 6 miles to Jersey Shore. The borough has supermarkets, restaurants, a hardware store and Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital. Residents of the east side are closer to the Aldi and Weis Markets in Old Lycoming Township, about 5 miles outside Anthony. Two miles past Old Lycoming, restaurants and bars line West Fourth Street in Williamsport, and UPMC Williamsport provides medical care.

Houses with mountain views

Only 170 homes are spread across Anthony’s 15 square miles, and it’s typical for no more than one house to sell in a year. Homes include Colonial Revival farmhouses on large plots of land and ranch-style homes perched on hills, with some front porches facing the Allegheny Mountains. Houses are typically secluded from neighbors on lots measuring 2 acres or more. Homes are usually worth between $185,000 and $360,000. Fracking occurs in a largely uninhabited section of the township north of Route 973. In 2016, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a study that found fracking can contaminate local drinking water under some circumstances. Meanwhile, the CAP Index Crime Score is a 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score on the scale and lower than the national average of 4.

Longtime presence for Anthony Baptist Church, Lycoming Christian Church

Two churches have called Anthony home for nearly 200 years: Anthony Baptist Church and Lycoming Christian Church. In addition to Sunday worship, both churches hold youth groups and Bible studies throughout the week. Lycoming Christian Church collects donations for The New Love Center, a Jersey Shore-based food pantry that helps more than 800 people across Clinton and Lycoming counties monthly.

Therapy dog roams Jersey Shore Area Senior High School

About 2 miles west of the township, Salladasburg Elementary School serves kindergarteners through fifth graders. However, the Jersey Shore Area School District is considering closing Salladasburg Elementary due to the costs of repairs the school needs. The district had not made a final decision as of October 2024, but if it shutters Salladasburg Elementary, children will move to either Jersey Shore Area Middle School or Avis Elementary School. Both schools are in Jersey Shore, adding at least 7 miles to kids’ trips to and from school. Salladasburg Elementary and Jersey Shore Area Middle School both get Niche grades of B. At B-minus-rated Jersey Shore Area Senior High School, teens may see Kempton the therapy dog roaming the halls on his way to help calm an anxious student or assist the guidance counselor.

Reaching Williamsport and its airport via U.S. Route 220

With no public transportation, Anthony is a car-dependent community. Pennsylvania Route 973 travels east to west through the township, routing to Salladasburg and the more developed communities in Old Lycoming. South of the township, U.S. Route 220 connects to Jersey Shore and Williamsport. About 15 miles east, Williamsport Regional Airport offers nonstop flights to Washington Dulles International Airport.
