Westgate
A pool, preschool and regular events at Pioneer Park
At the heart of the neighborhood, Westgate Park might be small, but it has a well-maintained playground and benches. For a much larger green space, the nearby Pioneer Park has an outdoor pool, lighted tennis courts, and football fields. Pioneer's community center has an indoor gym and pickleball courts. The Arlington Heights Park District offers youth sports, summer camps and preschool inside the center. Pioneer Park is also the site of holiday celebrations like Trunk or Treat, and when the cold Illinois winter blows in, the ice-skating rink opens. "Pioneer is a really great park, and since it's so close to Westgate Elementary School, a lot of the school events happen there," Duchek says. The active PTA at Westgate Elementary and career pathways at Rolling Meadows High
Younger kids are zoned to attend Westgate Elementary School, which is walkable from many homes. The school has an active Parent-Teacher Association that sends out monthly newsletters and plans events like the annual Fall Fest or grade-level movie nights. "Outside Westgate, there's a banner reading: Welcome back to West-GREAT," Duchek says. "There's a sense of pride at that school, and the parents get so involved and interactive with the PTA."Westgate grads move on to South Middle School. Niche rates South Middle and Westgate Elementary with an A-minus grade. Then it's on to Rolling Meadows High School, which gets an A-plus. Rolling Meadows offers more than 20 AP courses and a Career Pathways program offering specialized courses in fields like finance, health science and the arts.
A few blocks from the neighborhood, Our Lady of the Wayside School is a private option for kindergarten through eighth-grade students in partnership with the Catholic Church next door.
Classic midcentury homes with a range of sizes
Westgate looks like a classic midcentury suburb, with tree-lined streets and basketball hoops at the end of driveways. It has a 2 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, lower than the national average of 4. Most homes are from the 1950s and 60s, including ranch-style houses, split-levels and Colonial Revivals typical of that time. Yard sizes average around a quarter acre, enough space for a backyard playset or pool. "There's a lot for any type of buyer there," Duchek says. "There are opportunities for first-time homebuyers or downsizers to get a ranch-style or for people looking to upgrade to a larger colonial. We are even seeing builders razing some older homes to add in new construction." Home prices range from $300,000 to $600,000, depending on size and renovations.Old-fashioned breakfast among familiar faces at TNT's Snack Shop
Right within the neighborhood, TNT's Snack Shop is an unassuming establishment with an old-fashioned diner feel. "Sure, we have some fancy upscale places in Arlington Heights, but if you want a real-deal, simple breakfast, TNT's is your local neighborhood spot," Duchek says. The smell of freshly cooked bacon rises from the open kitchen, and the outdoor patio is enclosed with heaters during cold Chicago winters. There's also an ATM on-site because they only take cash. "We have plenty of regulars at TNT's because our service is friendly and we don't fool around with our menu — people know what they're going to get," says Peggy Kordecki, who has worked there for over 30 years. "People come here to meet friends, and they often end up making more friends once they're here."TNT's is part of a small strip mall that most Westgate residents can walk to in less than 5 minutes. Other local stores include Ace's Hardware and Walgreens, Hong Kong for Chinese take-out, and Fitness 19, a full-service gym.
Evenings of outdoor dining in downtown Arlington Heights
For more shopping and dining options, downtown Arlington Heights is just over a mile away. The quaint downtown has a wide variety of restaurants and boutiques, as well as a weekly farmers market. There's a Jewel-Osco for everyday grocery runs, and Harmony Park is the site of frequent live concerts and holiday celebrations. Throughout the summer, the main intersection around Harmony Park goes pedestrian-only for Arlington Alfresco evenings. Shops stay open late, restaurants put tables out onto the street, and live music plays under twinkling string lights. Arlington Alfresco started during the COVID pandemic and was so well-received that it's now a yearly tradition. "Our village leaders really have a vision for downtown, and it has turned into a thriving community with a lot of charm," Duchek says. "It's definitely a draw for those closer neighborhoods like Westgate that have direct proximity."Express Metra trains help cut down on a long commute to Chicago
For those planning to commute into Chicago, traffic along Interstate 90 and Interstate 290 builds up during rush hour. Westgate is about 26 miles out from the city, a trip that should take 45 minutes but is often upwards of an hour and a half. Luckily, Westgate is situated between two Metra stops — Arlington Park and Arlington Heights. Both are about a mile away and offer commuter parking. "Because Arlington Heights is such a popular area, there are express train options, which can shave off like 30 minutes from a rush hour commute," Duchek says. A typical Metra commute is about an hour; an express train can make it in 30 minutes.Westgate is also just north of Endeavor Heath Northwest Community Hospital and its surrounding medical suite, which is a large employer in the area. However, proximity to the hospital can cause some emergency vehicle noise.
