A small suburban village north of Worcester
Ashburnham is a rural township with expansive, tree-dotted residential reaches and a small suburban village at its heart. Mostly comprised of local retail and dining, Ashburnham has a classic New England small-town feel. The town's appeal is visible from its historic buildings dating back to colonial times to its proximity to outdoor attractions and nearby cities for suburban amenities. Scott Simpson, a 19-year Realtor with Century 21 North East, says, "It's a small town made up of a small, quaint town center with mostly outlying rural areas and lakes nearby for recreation. It also hosts Cushing Academy, a private prep school for people seeking that."
Lakefront residences and spacious lots
Single-family homes range from $280,000 to $750,000, with prices depending on square footage and lot size. Considering the multiple recreational lakes within Ashburnham, lakefront properties can run higher prices even with smaller square footage. Cape Cods, split-level colonials and traditional-style Foursquare homes fill the town. Outlying residential lots have minimum requirements of 1-1.4 acres, while residents in the village tend to live in much more condensed homes with more shared walls and tighter lawns. Simpson says, "Though there is some farming that goes on, it's not enough to be labeled as a farming town."

Local shops up and down Main Street
Locally, there are various local stores for convenience and dining on Main Street; Ashburnham Wine & Spirits is located next to Town Hall and sells prepared foods like bagels, sandwiches and ice cream. Brother's Pizza serves calzones and hot pizzas. For Friday nights out, residents can head to The Tavern on Central and order fish and chips or flatbread pizzas with specialty cocktails. Residents are a 7-mile drive from supermarket chain Hannaford in neighboring Gardner for groceries.

Lakes and proximity to Wachusett Mountain State Reservation
Seven lakes and several natural locales decorate the outlying regions of Ashburnham. Ashburnham State Forest is where two major regional walking trails converge: the Midstate and Wapack Trails. Simpson adds, "It's also close to Mount Wachusett, which is a huge recreational draw." Wachusett Mountain State Reservation is a 3,000-acre park where residents can hike or bike through lush greenery or drive a car to the 2,006-foot peak of the mountain and enjoy the vibrant views of Massachusetts wilderness stretching for miles.

Historic landmarks decorate Ashburnham
Town Hall was constructed in 1838 and moved from its original location in 1791; both stand today as historical buildings. Similarly, Stevens Memorial Library was opened in 1891 and still allows residents to check out books. These buildings are kept in top condition, showcasing Ashburnham's physical history and how the community has changed. And at the private Cushing Academy, a unique landmark stands: The Schoolboy of 1850, a statue of a child with books and a lunch pail, mid-stride facing the school. The statue is dedicated to the young boys of that Civil War generation who fought in war and brokered peace.

Route 12 to Leominster or Worcester
Simpson says, "You'd absolutely need a car to get around Ashburnham." Massachusetts state Route 12 is the main road within Ashburnham and can take residents to nearby cities like Leominster or Worcester. Ashburnham has a small-town character with mainly local retail and dining and outlying rural areas for homebuyers seeking secluded environments or lakefront homes.
