Country and convenience near Asheville
Nature and luxury converge on the hilltops of Town Mountain, an Asheville neighborhood in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Overlooking Beaverdam and Haw Creek valleys, Town Mountain consists of about a thousand residences on or near the wooded corridor of Town Mountain Road, a canopied stretch of roadway rising nearly 1,500 feet throughout its meandering 7-mile stretch. Residents choose Town Mountain for its panoramic views and proximity to downtown Asheville, according to Brent Russell, president of Friends of Town Mountain and broker with Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks Realtors. “Town Mountain is without a doubt one of the most beautiful drives in Asheville,” he says. “With every turn you have a beautiful vista and a beautiful view. People pull over to see bears, turkeys, deer, all sorts of wildlife.”

Plentiful hiking trails and stately sights
Hiking trails and scenic overlooks abound along Town Mountain Road. Craven Gap Trail starts at Town Mountain's northernmost point and is a great out-and-back route to the striking Haw Creek Valley Overlook. Cyclists also frequent Town Mountain Road. “It’s a cyclist’s dream to start in the city and go up and bike back down,” Russell says. The Biltmore House is on everyone’s list when they visit the area. The 250-bed French Renaissance chateau is known as America’s largest home.

Luxury living in the mountains
Secluded homes and gated communities dot the mountainside and peek out from dense trees in Town Mountain. The area doesn’t adhere to a specific architectural style. Sleek, ultra-modern homes feature floor-to-ceiling windows or glass walls to bring the mountains and scenery into the home. Historical and mid-century modern homes can be found here, too. Inventory is low and the market is highly competitive. Homes range in price from $500,000 to upwards of $5 million. Townhomes in a subdivision, such as The Village at Chunn’s Cove, can cost $760,000 with $175 in monthly homeowners association fees. Town Mountain is also rife with development opportunities, with empty lots ranging from $100,000 to $400,000. Russell says the Town Mountain area has a combination of full-time residents and second homeowners, noting Asheville has a large second-home market.

Minutes away from Beer City USA
Town Mountain is purely residential, so residents drive into Asheville to shop, run errands and grab a bite to eat. Town Mountainers are less than 4 miles from away numerous grocery stores, including Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Harris Teeter. The walkable South Slope District is chockful of art galleries, award-winning restaurants and breweries. Asheville boasts more breweries per capita than any U.S. city, according to its tourism website, and has earned the title of Beer City USA numerous times since 2009. Russell raves about Chai Pani, known for Indian street food and family-style cuisine. The brewers at White Labs Brewing Co. develop their own yeast, using it not only for their craft beers and wood-fired pizzas but also for research and development into new yeast strains.

Arts and events in Asheville
Residents go to Asheville for events, of which the city has plenty. Pack Square has concerts and events almost every night during the summer. Asheville Art in the Park hosts a market for artists on three weekends each June and October, where skilled artists of glass, ceramics, wood, jewelry and metal show off their creations. There’s also the River Arts District, a creative hub with studios and galleries for hundreds of artists located in former warehouses and mills. “Asheville has a large entrepreneurial spirit. People support artists here, and buying local is a big part of the culture,” Russell says.
Pritchard Park hosts lots of small concerts at its amphitheater in the summer.
