Lithia Park
Exploring the Ashland Japanese Gardens
Lithia Park follows Ashland Creek and spans between the Downtown area to the north and the Mount Ashland Ski Area to the south. The park’s name stems from the naturally occurring lithium oxide, or “lithia,” found in the creek's flowing waters. “Archeological evidence shows that Native Americans drank from the springs and, during the Chautauqua movement at the turn of the last century, people visited the springs for health reasons,” Whitaker says. Today, parkgoers can still drink the lithium-infused water from one of several fountains throughout the park and nearby Ashland Plaza. Lithia Park also has outdoor athletic facilities like tennis and pickleball courts, a small wading area along the creek and a playground for children. The park’s Butler Bandshell hosts free concerts, says Whitaker. “Ashland is one of the few cities in the United States that has a city-funded band, which hosts free performances during the summer,” she says. People can meditate at the Ashland Japanese Garden, a serene and meticulously landscaped pocket of Lithia Park with koi ponds, cherry blossom trees and meditation pavilions.Prairie-style and Craftsman single-family homes
The single-family homes surrounding Lithia Park have large, grassy lawns that match the neighborhood atmosphere. Historic Prairie-style and Craftsman homes from the early 20th century are common, but prospective homebuyers can also find bungalows and colonial-inspired residences. Stone detailing, covered front porches, private driveways and garages are common, and most single-family homes range in price from $500,000 to $1.1 million. The more expensive the house, the closer it typically is to Lithia Park and Ashland Plaza.Performances at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Situated at the northern end of Lithia Park is the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), which Whitaker says is “the largest repertory theatre west of the Mississippi.” The OSF campus has multiple theatres and performance venues, including the Angus Bowmer Theatre, the Green Show Stage, the Thomas Theatre and the Allen Elizabethan Theatre. “Shows typically start in late March or April, and they used to end in the fall, but now the OSF is also doing some performances in the off-season during winter,” Whitaker says. “It’s one of the biggest tourist draws in southern Oregon.” The Thomas Theatre and Bowmer Theatre are indoor venues, while the Elizabethan Theatre serves as the OSF’s primary outdoor stage. Each year, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival holds more than 800 performances and draws in nearly half a million audience members.Ashland Plaza is a shopping and dining hub
The neighborhood encompasses Ashland Plaza, a triangular shopping and dining hub along North Main Street. Several popular local restaurants are here, including Louie’s of Ashland, which serves American staples, like hamburgers and barbecue. “Louie’s has seating on the back patio that overlooks Ashland Creek, and it’s very family-friendly,” says Whitaker. “They have a historic bar, which was built either the early 1900s or late 1800s.” Other dining spots along the plaza include Oberon’s Cocktail Bar & Restaurant, Skout Taphouse and Osteria La Briccola, a fine dining Italian restaurant. Residents can find corner markets, bookstores, health and beauty shops and fashion boutiques throughout the plaza. For grocery shopping, the Ashland Food Co-op is within walking distance of the Ashland Plaza and the entrance to Lithia Park.Students served by the Ashland School District
Students in Lithia Park are served by the Ashland School District, which receives an overall A-minus rating from Niche and was named No. 11 on Niche’s “Best School Districts in Oregon” list in 2024. Kindergarten through fifth-grade students here can be zoned for either Walker Elementary or Helman Elementary School, both of which receive A-minus ratings. Ashland Middle and Ashland High School are also rated A-minus. In 2010, Ashland High School was awarded a silver ranking from U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best High Schools” survey, based on the school’s outstanding academic scores and college preparation programs.Walking to Lithia Park and Downtown Ashland
Most neighbors can walk to Lithia Park and the Downtown Plaza. People living on the neighborhood's south side can drive than 1 mile on either Glenview Drive or Granite Street to get downtown. The Rogue Valley Transportation District, or RVTD, operates three bus routes that travel through the Ashland area, including two that have stops along Main Street at the Ashland Plaza. Commuters can take Main Street or Interstate 5 approximately 14 miles into the nearby city of Medford. The Asante Ashland Community Hospital has a 24-hour emergency room 2 miles north of the neighborhood, and the Rogue Valley International Medford Airport is 16 miles away. The airport offers direct flights to a dozen major cities throughout the western United States.
