Chalet Woods’s green surroundings may be surprising given the neighborhood is in one of the South’s largest cities. Only about a dozen streets and a few cul-de-sacs make up Chalet Woods, a pocket of homes surrounded by trees. A nature preserve directly to the south adds to the area’s natural feel, but, at the same time, the Atlanta neighborhood us less than a mile from a commercial corridor and Interstate 20.
Chalet Woods’ midcentury homes often have ranch-style designs and fenced-in backyards on the outside and full basements and hardwood floors on the inside. Newer homes outfitted with farmhouse-inspired and contemporary architectural features have also been built in the neighborhood. Many properties that hit the market need significant renovations, while move-in-ready houses have recently sold from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$500,000s.
Realtor LaTonya Dasher of Latlin Bevsho Realty Inc. says the neighborhood's proximity to two popular parks is one of the biggest draws. Both parks are just a stone's throw away, she says. "Literally, you can toss a rock, and you don't have to put any force behind it," she says. To the south, Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Nature Preserve conserves more than 100 acres of mature hardwood forest, including old-growth trees. A mile-long trail passes under the preserve’s magnolias and sugar maples. North of Chalet Woods, kids play soccer on a pitch installed by the U.S. Soccer Foundation at Isabel Gates Webster Park. Less than 3 miles away, trails at Cascade Springs Nature Preserve take hikers past a cascading waterfall, alongside Utoy Creek and Civil War-era earthworks.
Commuters heading to Downtown Atlanta have two transportation options within a mile of the neighborhood. They can hop on Interstate 20 to make the 7-mile drive, which usually takes 20 minutes or less, or board a MARTA train at the Hamilton E. Holmes station and ride downtown in less than 10 minutes. Chalet Woods is also close to Interstate 285, a beltway around Atlanta that you can use to make the 14-mile drive to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Pull out of the neighborhood, and within minutes you’ll be in the center of a cluster of shops and restaurants at the intersection of Peyton Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Some of the businesses there include:
The highly rated Atlanta Public Schools system serves Chalet Woods. Students attending schools in the district can complete rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum at nearly every grade level because Peyton Forest Elementary School, Jean Childs Young Middle School and Benjamin E.
