West Auburn is a neighborhood with diverse subdivisions, ranging from leafy lawn suburbia to rural seclusion the farther residents get from the highways. It features a retail center, multiple major roads that lead to nearby cities, and several unique recreational locales. The neighborhood is a mixture of outlying farmland with a suburban center. Tracey Fiorelli, a 21-year Realtor with Janice Mitchell R.E., Inc, says, "The town and its neighborhoods are big enough to maintain themselves; people move to live in Auburn and use the parks and retail centers there, then commute to work elsewhere. A lot of the more rural towns nearby don't offer the same services that Auburn does."

Dark Brook for recreation, with more parks in town
Dark Brook is a 386-acre reservoir in West Auburn, locally called "Electric Pond." The lake is a popular spot to fish for tiger muskies and bass or peacefully kayak while listening to the sounds of New England wildlife. Granger Ledges is a large park featuring dense foliage and rocky cliffs with views of the bustling Interstate 395, the eastern border of West Auburn. Further out in the town are places like Auburn Recreation Complex, which has a baseball diamond, tennis courts, a children's playground and a dog park.
Rural and suburban homes in West Auburn
West Auburn is full of raised ranch and traditional-style homes with attached garages that run from $240,000 to $760,000, depending on the homes' square footage and lot size. Streets branch off from retail-packed main roads and end in residential roundabouts. The further the roads go south, the more rural the homes and land become. That's what people like about Auburn; there's housing to be found under $400,000, and it can go up higher for those seeking luxury homes, so there is diversity in the market."

Auburn Plaza for retail wiithin the neighborhood
Auburn Plaza Shopping Center is a retail district within the neighborhood that features a T.J. Maxx and Home Depot, then a BJ's and Auburn Park n' Shop supermarket for groceries. For more options, a brief 2-mile drive further up Southbridge Street lands residents at the Auburn Mall, featuring a day spa, food court, and more than 50 name-brand stores to choose from. For close-to-home dining, there's Ninety Nine Restaurant and Pub, a family-friendly New England chain pub. Chuck's Steakhouse is close to Auburn Plaza and serves steaks, eggplant parmesan and house-special margaritas.

City-wide schooling with a competitive civics club
The neighborhood is served by Auburn Public Schools, which earns an overall grade of B from Niche. Students can begin at Bryn Mawr Elementary, which earns a B, and continue on to Auburn Middle School, rated a B-plus. Auburn Senior High earns a B and features a We The People club for Advanced Placement students in Government and Politics classes. The club studies for a competition at the Edward Kennedy Institute to debate club members from different schools about philosophy, the Founding Fathers and modern effects of the Constitution.
Served by Worcester buses and major highways
Three WRTA bus stops service West Auburn along the 29 and 42 bus routes and can take residents from Auburn Plaza to downtown Worcester. There is also a Park & Ride center in West Auburn for commuters to park their cars at a stop and take the bus. Fiorelli adds, "It's not really walkable; there aren't many sidewalks unless you're near the schools or neighborhoods." Residents can take Interstates 395 and 290, US-20, or Mass Pike to travel to cities like Worcester in 8 miles, Providence in 42 miles or Boston in 48 miles. West Auburn has suburban housing and ample name-brand retail within minutes, but it also has spaced-out homes, rural lots and farms to visit or shop from in neighboring towns like Oxford and Sutton.
