A vibrant and welcoming neighborhood
Like much of the city of Austin, the East MLK neighborhood has seen remarkable growth over the last several years. The entire East Austin region has undergone a renaissance, morphing from a relatively low-income area to a much more diverse – both racially and economically – area of the city. East MLK reflects that transformation. It’s a neighborhood that draws from all walks of life, including artists and musicians, professionals and retirees. They converge on this vibrant neighborhood because of its tight-knit community and its welcoming atmosphere. “It’s such a dynamic, eclectic neighborhood,” says Realtor Dustin Raye, who has been representing real estate transactions in the city for more than a decade. “There are so many good restaurants nearby, and there are parks and golf courses and so much more.”
Quintessential Austin dining and shopping experiences
For grocery shopping, most residents opt to make the 2-mile drive to H-E-B on East 51st Street. For home necessities, Target is located in the Capital Plaza mall, approximately 4 miles north of the neighborhood. At Capital Plaza, shoppers can also find Walgreens, Ross, Champs Sports and other retailers.
When dining out is on the menu, locals get their fill of traditional Texas barbecue at KG BBQ, where hungry diners start lining up at 11 a.m., because KG BBQ is only open until they’re sold out. And for those interested in learning the art of smoking the perfect brisket, they offer cooking classes. For a more intimate date night setting, award-winning Birdie’s is quintessential Austin, featuring seasonal menus and an extensive wine list, all served in a casual, warm environment where your truly haute cuisine meal might be served on mismatched dinnerware and your napkin might just be paper.
