It's the reason the Agua Fria River that runs north-south in Avondale is usually bone-dry. Many houses in the area have covered patios, so locals can enjoy the outdoors without standing directly in the heat.
When the weather permits, Coldwater West residents like to get outdoors. Bordering the Agua Fria basin is Festival Fields Park, a community gathering space that saw extensive renovations in 2020. Athletic fields and courts for basketball and pickleball also exist, as does a skate park for people to practice their tricks. The smaller Fred Campbell Park has a lighted basketball court and a shaded playground.
