A quiet residential enclave in the South Hills of Pittsburgh
While Baldwin Township covers just one square mile in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, the suburban town offers a host of local amenities. It embraces its motto of “a small community, with big hearts and high hopes” in everything from its quiet residential streets to its lush community park and quaint business district filled with longstanding local businesses. “It’s a cute little pocket neighborhood, but it’s centrally located in the South Hills,” says Maria Holzworth, a real estate agent with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services and Pittsburgh native. “It’s a tight-knit community, and there’s not a lot of turnover. Once people have a family there, they tend to stay.” Less than 10 miles from Pittsburgh, Baldwin Township offers comfortable suburban living in a residential community with access to the city center. “People just like that aspect of being close to everything, but without that big city feel,” Holzworth says.

Colonial Revivals and raised ranch-style homes with modest lots
Most homes in Baldwin Township were built around the mid-1900s. Traditional Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and raised ranch-style homes feature a mix of brick and vinyl siding. Houses sit side-by-side on modest lots with room for a small backyard, and most properties have front-facing driveways that lead to attached garages. Home prices typically range from $130,000 to $315,000, but the township’s small size means that inventory can be sparse. “There’s always limited inventory because it’s so small, and people tend to stay here,” Holzworth says. “I tell a lot of my first-time homebuyers to look at Baldwin Township because it has all of the perks of a more expensive community like Mt. Lebanon, but without the price tag.” Only 22 homes were sold within Baldwin Township over the last year, but when there are homes for sale, they tend to sell after about a month-and-a-half on the market. The township has an overall CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Pre-apprenticeship programs at Baldwin High School
The Baldwin-Whitehall School District earns an overall grade of B from Niche and has an average student-teacher ratio of 17-to-1. Students can attend McAnnulty Elementary School for kindergarten before moving on to Whitehall Elementary School for first and second grade; both schools receive a B-plus from Niche. R.A. Lutz Elementary School covers third through fifth grade and has not yet been ranked by Niche, as it opened its doors in January 2024. J.E. Harrison Middle School scores a B, and Baldwin High School earns a B-minus. The high school partners with Catalyst Connection, a local economic development organization, to offer two pre-apprenticeship programs in industrial manufacturing. Both programs allow teens to earn industry certifications while obtaining hands-on experience at local manufacturing companies. Students can also apply to the Young Scholars of Western PA Charter School, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade with an emphasis on global studies.
J.E. Harrison Education Center has a growing education program for children in the area.

Playground and sports courts at Armstrong Park
Armstrong Park offers ample green space in the heart of town. It features a playground, a paved walking path, basketball courts and a picnic pavilion for community gatherings. Residents are less than 3 miles from Mt. Lebanon Golf Course, a public 9-hole course that’s open year-round. Baldwin Township is also about 2 miles from the Ice Castle Arena, an indoor facility with two NHL-sized ice rinks that is home to youth sports programs like the Pittsburgh Predators Hockey Club. It also offers public skating hours, adult hockey leagues and individual skating lessons.

Local festivities include Baldwin Township Community Day
Community events bring residents together throughout the year. Seasonal festivities at the Baldwin Township Municipal Building range from cookies with Santa Claus to a spring craft show with local vendors. In September, Baldwin Township Community Day features inflatable bounce houses, lawn games and basket raffles in Armstrong Park. The town also hosts concerts and food truck nights in the park each summer. “The township is grouped together with Whitehall and Baldwin Boroughs, so when your kids go to school in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District, you’re involved with anything that’s going on in any of those communities,” Holzworth says. “I always say that you stay at one, and you play at three.”

Shopping and dining along the McNeilly Road corridor
While the township is primarily residential, there’s a small business district along McNeilly Road. The thoroughfare hosts local businesses like Afghan Halal Market, McNeilly Nails and McNeilly Automotive Service. Aldi and Dollar General sell the essentials. Dining options range from fast-casual spots like Subway to family-owned restaurants such as Bellisario’s Pizza Palace. Amel’s Restaurant is known for its traditional Mediterranean flavors, and The Getaway Bar & Grill provides a local hangout serving American classics. For big-box stores, residents can head 4 miles away to South Hills Village. The indoor shopping mall features more than 130 different retailers, including Target, Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Access to U.S. Route 19 and Pittsburgh commutes
Beyond its quiet residential streets and local amenities, Baldwin Township is primarily car-dependent. "It's what people often call a bedroom community," says Bob Dini, Director of Sales in the Mt Lebanon office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Preferred Realty. "It's very close to Pittsburgh and has excellent proximity for people who are working downtown." McNeilly Road is the town’s main thoroughfare and connects residents to nearby highways like Pennsylvania Route 88 and U.S. Route 19, also known as Liberty Avenue. The Liberty Bridge leads across the Monongahela River and into Pittsburgh, less than a 6-mile drive away. Pittsburgh Regional Transit provides light rail service at McNeilly Station, which sits along the township’s eastern edge at the end of McNeilly Road. Pittsburgh International Airport is less than 20 miles from town. The closest hospital is St. Clair Hospital, which is less than 4 miles from Baldwin Township and is part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. With more than 2,500 employees, it’s also the top employer in the South Hills of Pittsburgh.
