Historic yet culturally cutting edge, Abell’s rowhomes are hot tickets
In the Abell neighborhood of North Baltimore sits the “Painted Ladies.” Vibrant and colorful, these Victorian-style rowhouses line Guilford Avenue, featuring spacious front porches and bay windows. An iconic landmark, the lively hues of the “Painted Ladies” mirror the neighborhood’s welcoming vibes. Situated east of Charles Village and west of Waverly, Abell is mostly residential, with some commercial retailers along Greenmount Avenue. Named for the Abell family — the longtime owners of The Baltimore Sun — the neighborhood is 9 square blocks and is home to about 1,000 residents. Baltimore hosts more than 60 museums, so it’s fitting that Abell shows its spirit with brightly painted large-scale murals throughout the neighborhood. Abell is a close-knit community of long-time residents, young professionals and families. According to Realtor Daniel Motz, with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty and a real estate agent for more than 23 years, “Initially, buyers in Abell are drawn to the neighborhood’s comfortable urban vibe and very often its proximity to Johns Hopkins University. But after that, residents choose to live here for many reasons, from the cultural and professional sports scenes to these well-updated historic homes.”
