Baltimore-Linwood is a densely populated neighborhood that offers an urban lifestyle just three miles east of downtown.
Blocks of two-story rowhouses line the streets of Baltimore-Linwood, keeping neighbors close together. With a mix of brick and stone facades, these early 1900s rowhouses typically offer three bedrooms. For a completely rehabbed home with brand-new interiors and modern amenities, you can expect to pay around $250,000 to $300,000. Livable homes without the latest renovations run around $150,000 to $200,000. And if you’re looking for some sweat equity, you can get a fixer-upper for around $85,000 to $125,000. Most rowhouses come with a short stoop in the front and a small fenced-in backyard and parking space accessible through a back alleyway. You may even find a home with a back deck and a rooftop patio where you can soak in views of the city.
Kindergarten through eighth-grade students attend Highlandtown Elementary/Middle School No. 237, ranked a C-minus by Niche. They’ll go on to Patterson High School, which also has a C-minus grade and utilizes a cohort model that heavily focuses on career and technology education.
When you want to escape the city, head to Patterson Park, whether to go for a stroll on the tree-lined walkways, play basketball on the colorful courts or go swimming in the community pool. The park is also home to several sports fields used by local leagues and the Mimi DiPietro Family Skating Rink, which offers hockey leagues, public skate sessions and lessons.
Several residential streets have a corner market, restaurant or bar you can walk to from home. Hang out late with friends at Echo Bar & Grill, where you can enjoy Latin American food while playing pool and darts until 2 a.m. any day of the week. On the north and south sides of the neighborhood are busier shopping centers with more restaurants like Capt’n Franks Seafood, serving dine-in and carryout crabs for decades, along with lively hangout spots like Urban Axes. “People here really like to just come out and have a good time,” says CJ Harvey, project manager with Urban Axes, “It’s becoming a fun, up-and-coming neighborhood that we’re proud to be part of.” Urban Axes offers locals an entertaining experience of axe-throwing and football bowling. You also have nearby grocery stores like ALDI and Hazlo International Foods, which sells products you can’t find in most places. For more shopping needs, you can head to all the big box stores in Canton, about a mile south.
Though less than a mile from access to Interstate 895, Baltimore-Linwood’s location allows you to avoid the congested highways wherever you need to go, including downtown. “It’s a really convenient place to live,” says Harvey, “You’re close to everything in the city, but not in the middle of all the chaos.” And with several MTA bus stops around the neighborhood, you can avoid taking a car altogether.
