A hub of Greek culture in southeast Baltimore
The Greektown neighborhood in southeast Baltimore is a diverse community full of history, culture, good food and a family atmosphere. Once known as “The Hill”, an influx of Greek immigrants throughout the 1960s and 1970s has infused this neighborhood with its own distinct and vibrant culture. “It’s one of the safest neighborhoods in Baltimore,” says Theo Harris, a Realtor with eXp Realty who came to Greektown from the old country 35 years ago. “It’s mostly brick houses from the early 1900s, with some new construction, and of course, amazing Greek restaurants all around. There are local businesses that have been around for a long time. There’s more of a cultural mix nowadays, which is only serving to breathe new life into the community. But it's still a hub of Greek culture not just for the city, but for the entire state.”
The restaurants of Greektown
While residents are close to the Shops at Canton Crossing, where they can shop for groceries at Harris Teeter and purchase household necessities at Target, they also do not have to venture far from the neighborhood to find high-quality imported goods. “Prima Foods is a Greek grocery store with national distribution,” Harris says. “Their products come directly from the old country and they sell at wholesale prices, so you can’t beat it. They stock lots of Greek wine, which we love.” And, of course, the restaurant scene in Greektown is unmatched, with a healthy mix of upstart local fare like Estiatorio Plaka and long-time staples such as Samos Restaurant. “When I arrived in the U.S. from Greece 35 years ago, I had my first meal in America at Samos,” Harris continues. “It had been open long before I arrived, and it’s still open under the same management today. It’s an oldie but a goodie, a real community cornerstone.” In addition to Mediterranean fare, locals will find a variety of Latino restaurants like El Merengue, which serves Dominican-style food, and Charro Negro Bar & Grill, a popular Mexican eatery.
People throughout the city pop into Greektown to eat at the many delicious Greek restaurants.

Parades and festivals on Eastern Avenue
As the name would suggest, Greek heritage plays a large role in this neighborhood’s gatherings and events. “Baltimore Restaurant Week has a Greek week, which is very successful every year,” Harris says. “And St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is vital to the community. The Greek Independence Day Parade ends there, and every summer the Greek Festival happens at the church. Those events really bring the community together.” Every year on March 25th, residents and visitors line Eastern Avenue to watch as locals march to the church, celebrating Greece's independence, dancing to traditional music and enjoying Greek cuisine. A few months later in June, the St. Nicholas Greek Festival takes over Greektown Square. The sound of live music and the smell of fresh loukoumades fill the air as tourists crowd the streets and dance with parish members beneath striped white and blue flags. “It’s not just a religious congregation, it’s a cultural one,” Harris adds.
Blue-and-white Baltimore row houses
Homes in Greektown are considered quintessential Baltimore style. “The stock is almost all brick townhouses that are 100 years old or more,” Harris says. “Although about 10 years ago, we had what you might call a Renaissance, so now there are some larger Modern townhouses with two-car garages on the north and south ends of the neighborhood.” These homes are almost exclusively two-story houses with covered front porches and narrow backyards. Some units feature protruding bay windows, while others include grassy front lawn patches and driveways large enough for a pair of vehicles. Prices range from around $175,000 to $350,000 depending on the build year, status of renovation and number of bedrooms. “The houses are still affordable, but they are scarce,” Harris adds. “When we have one, we sell it for asking or above in a couple of days.”
Some Greektown homes have small front yards.

Patterson’s boys basketball team recently won the regional championship. In addition, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church provides another important educational opportunity to area children. “Greek students come from all over Maryland to learn the language and the culture here,” Harris says. The school teaches students through high school and even offers classes for adults who wish to learn how to read, write and speak Greek.
