Northwest Baltimore community named in honor of Langston Hughes

Named for the Missouri-born American poet and social activist, the neighborhood of Langston Hughes is a Northwest Baltimore commuter area with classic brick row houses and access to the Rogers Ave Metro Rail Station. As part of the Northwest Baltimore Partnership, organizations in the area strive to make homeownership more attainable to new and existing residents looking to buy. With access to the dozens of shops and restaurants on Reisterstown Road and the C.C. Jackson Recreation Center, there is always something to do nearby. While this part of Northwest Baltimore may get a little busy during the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course, the area’s affordability compared to surrounding neighborhoods like Glen and Reisterstown Station makes it a desirable destination. The CAP Index Score for crime in Langston Hughes is 6 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4, with a 9 out of 10 for homicide.

Nearby C.C. Jackson Recreation Center and Legacy Community Park playground

Just a little east of Langston Hughes, the C.C. Jackson Recreation Center was named for Clarence Channing Jackson Jr., a former Baltimore City Recreation and Parks district supervisor. Today, it offers the community a wide range of free resources, including a weight room, an 84-foot indoor court for basketball and volleyball, as well as programs for resume writing assistance and job fairs. “No two communities are the same, so we try not to have any of those cookie-cutter programs,” says Darryl Sutton, chief of recreation and aquatics for the City of Baltimore. “We are more than a recreation center; anything the community may need, want, or even desire should be offered at our recreation centers.” C.C. Jackson is also part of Code Red, where they reserve cool indoor rooms and issue cold water to those who need it on hot days. Legacy Community Park has a small playground right on Reisterstown Road for fun with family and friends. Across the street is Jack Paulsen Park, known for its football field, which is used by The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Saints football team for practice and games.

Classic brick Baltimore row houses

Several rows of tightly packed brick row houses make up most of the housing in Langston Hughes, where neighbors can feel close-knit. Like nearby Arlington, prices here can range from $100,000 to around $200,000 for move-in ready homes with small front porches, fenced backyards and on-street parking. Mature Baltimore trees shade a few residences, though most have more minimal landscaping. Spacious sidewalks crisscross all over town for those who prefer to walk or bike to school or to the shops on Reisterstown Road. For first-time buyers looking to flip a home or invest in their future, row houses up for auction can cost between $20,000 and $80,000, though several will need major updates or renovations.

Baltimore City Public School partnerships and programs

Depending on their address, Langston Hughes students are zoned to start at either Arlington Elementary School or Pimlico Elementary Middle School for kindergarten through fifth grade. However, all students would still attend sixth through eighth grade at Pimlico. Because Baltimore allows students to apply for their high school of choice, students may go anywhere for ninth through twelfth grade. The nearest high school is Forest Park High, which partners with the YMCA foundation and offers dual enrollment. Students can obtain community service hours and college credit throughout their four-year studies. All three schools are graded a C-minus on Niche.
