Baltimore history, culture and ornate rowhouses in Upton
Upton is well known for its rich historical and cultural legacy, which dates back to the late 19th century. Passionate longtime residents take pride in the past as they continue to shape the neighborhood’s future. The community is one of Baltimore's earliest Black middle-class neighborhoods, lined with ornate rowhouses, dotted with charming pocket parks, and situated beside the vibrant Pennsylvania Avenue corridor and its range of shopping and dining options. It’s also connected to the city’s subway and bus systems and is only a few miles away from Downtown Baltimore, making it commuter-friendly.
City classic townhouses, old and new
Upton is filled with historic rowhouses in Queen Anne and Italianate styles, dating back to the early 1900s. Modern builds are also available in the Upton Gateway subdivision, a new development featuring brick rowhomes. Prices range from the lower $100,000s to the upper $300,000s, varying by square footage and remodel status. Though the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus is a mile south, Upton isn’t necessarily a college neighborhood. “I live within walking distance of the University of Maryland campus, but there aren't too many students around,” says Mark Moyer, a Realtor with Douglas Realty with 11 years of experience serving the Greater Baltimore area.
Many homes in Upton were built in the early 1900's and feature charming architectural details.

Close to downtown and connected to Baltimore transit
Downtown Baltimore is less than 2 miles away, which can take roughly 15 minutes depending on traffic. “The neighborhood is valued for its affordability and proximity to downtown,” says Moyer. “It’s also a really handy area for people who commute south, since it’s close to I-95 and Route 295.” The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is a 13-mile drive south along I-95 or Maryland Route 295, also called the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
Community efforts aimed at reducing crime in the area
The city’s violent crime rate has taken a historic drop in recent years, partially due to the extensive community outreach programs organized across the city. However, potential homebuyers need to be aware that Upton has a CAP Index Crime Score of 9 out of 10, higher than the national average score of 4 out of 10.
The No Boundaries Coalition is committed to “deconstructing boundaries and reconstructing community” in central West Baltimore. It hosts a wide range of events and programs for Upton residents. The 12-week Block Captains Boot Camp program builds leadership and community activism skills in young adults, while Fresh at the Avenue and Fresh Fridays offer opportunities to purchase fresh produce at a reasonable price, as well as culinary training. No Boundaries hosts Election Fairs to bring people straight to the polls, and even free Yoga in the Park.

Upton is a decent neighborhood. Crimes and drug dealers are usually seen here in the afternoon and night. Although it's not the ideal place to live, rent is easy to pay and there are plenty of food markets/carry-outs
