Capehart
Townhouses, ranch-style homes and new construction
Many of Capehart’s homes were built in the 1950s as military housing. These include two-story townhouses and ranch-style houses where two units are connected by a garage, which Conrad says were originally the captains’ houses. “They were built really well, and if they were maintained, then they’re a great little buy, and affordable,” Conrad says. These sit along wide, curving streets with no sidewalks, and the homes have grassy lawns and paved driveways. There are also some detached ranch-style homes that were built later, some of which are far from neighbors in a more rural setting. Prices typically range from around $150,000 to $400,000. New construction ranch-style homes and raised ranch homes are in small subdivisions nearby, and more new homes are under construction. These can range from $290,000 to around $570,000. Manufactured houses range from $20,000 to $240,000. Some parts of the neighborhood are city-owned public housing, and many residents here rent their homes. Some homes may be at risk for flooding; homebuyers should check area flood maps to assess their risk.Public schools earn mostly Bs
Kids can start school at Downeast School, which earns a C-plus from Niche and teaches pre-kindergarten through third grade. They can then go to the B-plus-rated Fairmount School for fourth and fifth grade, and then to the B-minus-rated James F. Doughty School for the middle grades. Bangor High earns a B-plus and is a 2002 National Blue Ribbon School. Students here can enroll in more than 25 Advanced Placement courses, including statistics, music theory and microeconomics.Car and bus routes to downtown Bangor, and an airport nearby
Union Street, Ohio Street and Broadway are the main throughfares through Capehart, leading about 4 miles to downtown Bangor. The city’s Community Connector bus has routes through the area. Houses of worship here include The Rock Church of Bangor and Lifeway Church. Bangor International Airport borders the community, and residents might hear airplane noise. St. Joseph Hospital is about 4 miles away, and Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, which has a level two trauma center, is 5 miles away. Most stores and restaurants are close to the airport
Busy Bee Variety is a convenience store that offers groceries and hot to-go meals. There are more options near the airport, including fast food chains and the locally owned Harvest Moon Deli, which has served paninis and salads since 2007. The Airport Mall shopping center has Marshalls and Ocean State Job Lot, a home goods discount store. For groceries, there’s Hannaford and Dollar Tree. More stores and restaurants are on Broadway.Kid-friendly parks, a nature trail and a canoe race
The Capehart Playground and Splash Pad is a popular place for kids to burn off some energy, and it’s also a community gathering place. Each June, the annual Summer Block Party here celebrates the start of summer with live music, games and a cookout. The Boys and Girls Club of Bangor is headquartered nearby, where kids can join after-school programs and summer camps. Union Street Recreation Area has baseball and soccer fields. The 28-acre Brown Woods is a natural area with a mostly flat 1-mile walking path through a pine forest. The Kenduskeag Stream borders Capehart, and each April, the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race brings hundreds of kayakers and canoers through the area as they paddle toward downtown Bangor. Spectators often gather at Six Mile Falls, located near the intersection of Broadway and Hudson Road, to watch the competitors navigate the stream’s rapids.
