Nestled among winding roads and woodsy nature preserves is Barrington Hills, a village where properties with lush, green lawns sit far from neighbors. This open space allows residents of this rural village – about 40 miles outside of Chicago – room to have hobby farms and raise horses. “It’s strictly single-family residential here. No commercial businesses or Airbnbs,” says Nikki Panos, Village Clerk of Barrington Hills. “Minimum 5-acre zoning is within the village code, so our spaces are well-protected and maintained.” A drive through Barrington Hills will feature horse stables and estates with Nantucket charm or colonial influence. “But we’re not strictly equestrian,” Panos says. “People here appreciate the outdoors. We have astronomy enthusiasts, birdwatchers, beekeepers, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and kayakers.”

Each home in Barrington Hills sits on no less than an acre, with some estates on dozens of acres. Colonial Revivals, French chateaus and contemporary estates with modern resort-style elements range in size from 4,000 to more than 10,000 square feet. Prices might start around $800,000 and rise to upwards of $5 million for homes with horseshoe driveways on or near one of the village's many private lakes. There are several spacious lots for sale, from 1 acre for $60,000 to 60 acres for $3 million. “What distinguishes Barrington Hills from other similar communities is the ability for residents to live in estate homes and raise horses on their properties,” says Melanie Parsons, Realtor at Keller Williams Success Realty. “There are many riding clubs in the area, like the Barrington Hills Riding Club and Fox River Valley Pony Club.”

Students can begin at Grove Avenue Elementary, which Niche grades an A-plus and ranks as the No. 3 best public elementary school in the state out of 2,225 schools. Learners can advance to Barrington Middle, which receives an A and then Barrington High, which Niche grades an A-plus and ranks as one of the best public schools for both STEM and college preparation in Illinois. “Some parents choose Saint Anne’s Catholic School for kindergarten through eighth grade,” Panos adds. The village has nearly 4,700 acres of forest preserves that residents can enjoy on foot, bike or horseback. Spring Lake Forest Preserve offers 45 miles of woodlands and rugged trails against a serene lake backdrop. Crabtree Nature Center offers wildlife exhibits and walking trails, but no dogs are allowed on site. Golfers can practice their backswing at Barrington Hills Country Club and dip into the 7,000-square-foot pool afterward. “Some subdivisions have their own private lakes, where people might have a dock for canoeing and swimming,” Panos says. “Our preservation efforts allow for a lot of wildlife in the area, from coyotes and vultures to different birds like owls, egrets and herons.”

Date nights at Region Kitchen
Locals go to the outskirts of Barrington Hills for shopping and dining excursions. They might grab breakfast at Canteen Restaurant, a 1940s-themed diner. Chessie’s Restaurant serves surf and turf in a former train station, where patrons can dine inside a train car. For a night out and an impeccable culinary experience, people go to Region Kitchen and Bar. “Whether you’re looking for high-end meals or fast food, it’s all nearby. Locals don’t have to go into the city,” Panos says. “The Arboretum of South Barrington is a nice outdoor mall with higher-end restaurants,” Panos adds. To stock the pantry, residents head to Heinen’s Grocery Store and Jewel Osco.

Cruising 2-lane highways and I-90
Two-lane highways are the main ways for Barrington Hills residents to get around. U.S. Route 14 runs along the north side and Interstate 90 can be accessed on the south side, the latter leading to downtown Chicago in 40 miles. “People can also take the express train and get to the city in 40 minutes,” Panos says.
Fall festivals and philanthropies
The Barrington Hills Fall Festival brings the community together annually. “One year, they did a honey-tasting competition. Lots of people practice beekeeping on their properties,” Panos says. “Residents here can be as private or as social as they choose. There are lots of opportunities to get involved in the community, or they can simply maintain their provicy.” One way to get involved is through one of the many philanthropic organizations in the village. Members can help the Sanfilippo Foundation, a private estate in Barrington Hills that preserves a collection of instruments and mechanical music machines.

Forty-five miles northwest of downtown Chicago, land spreads out far and wide. North Barrington Hills is in the Chicago metropolitan area, but it’s a neighborhood with some rural characteristics. “This neighborhood is serene and tranquil,” says Rob Morrison, a broker at Coldwell Banker Residential with almost 20 years of experience. “If you have property on at least 5 acres, you can own livestock. Many people in this neighborhood have horses.” Several places can board horses for residents and even provide lessons for those who want to learn to ride.
It’s common to see people on horseback in this area with private trails maintained by The Riding Club of Barrington Hills riding organization. The all-volunteer group maintains the traditions of people getting around on horses. There are trails that club members can use between Spring Creek and Algonquin Roads. Public trails are available at Spring Lake Forest Preserve, a few miles south, with over 4,000 acres to explore. The Barrington Hills Polo Club has indoor and outdoor polo matches year-round. The LeCompte Kalaway Cup is a popular draw, with two polo matches every September. Also, it features the Parade of Hounds, where foxhounds come onto the field along with riders in traditional red hunting coats. Some landowners in the area also allow riding trails across their property during the event. Deerwood Farm is one of the many boarding facilities in the neighborhood. “Some people will board their horses because they don’t want to deal with the extra maintenance on their property,” Morrison says. There are also riding lessons available.
If it’s not a love of horses that draws people to this neighborhood, then the schools that are part of the Barrington Community School District Number 220 will. The district receives an A grade on Niche. Countryside Elementary also gets an A and has a student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. Barrington Middle School Station Campus gets an A-plus Niche grade for the quality of teachers and an A grade overall. Barrington High School has Advanced Placement courses in Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science at the A-plus rated school. St. Anne Catholic School is a private school option for preschool through eighth grade.
“When homebuyers consider North Barrington Hills, many seek the security of a gated community, country club lifestyle and estate living with ample land,” says Melanie Parsons, Realtor with Keller Williams Success Realty with nearly 20 years of experience. But that’s not all that’s available. The types of houses range from a modest bungalow built in the 1930s with two bedrooms and less than 1,000 square feet to a sprawling estate with seven bedrooms and 15,000 square feet on over 30 acres of land. The price range goes from $400,000 to the multi-millions. Some houses sit on 5-acre plots of land, the minimum for keeping livestock. Some are on smaller tracts, around a quarter of an acre. Ranch style and Colonial Revival are a couple of prominent architectural styles.
Consisting of 45 acres, Citizens Park has a pavilion that can be rented out for wedding receptions or business meetings. Tennis and basketball courts, picnic shelters and a playground are also scattered around the grounds. An amphitheater is home to occasional concerts with seating up to 200 spectators. It’s home to weekly Wednesday evening concerts in July and part of August from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The Pepper Family Accessible Treehouse is also at Citizens Park and can be rented out for birthday parties. It’s open from April through October. Barrington Hills Country Club has been around for over 100 years. It’s a private club, and current ones must invite prospective members.
Shakou is a Japanese restaurant with a trendy and eclectic interior. The name means ‘social life’ in Japanese. The sushi bar is the restaurant’s centerpiece, and popular outdoor seating on the upper terrace is available. Ciao Baby! is a locally owned Italian restaurant that makes its meatballs and is a popular place for private parties. For food shopping, Heinen’s is a locally owned regional upscale supermarket chain with an in-store butcher. Jewel-Osco is a Chicagoland grocery store staple.
Although the houses on multiple acres may seem very rural, the Barrington Metra station is a few minutes away. It’ll take about 30 minutes to get to downtown on the express train and a 45-minute trip on a train with all the stops. Other stops north of the Fox River are at Cary and Fox Grove.
