An early community once known as Long-A-Coming
It’s been a long time since Berlin’s days as Long-A-Coming, a village first settled in 1714, named after the Lonaconing Trail that once led Native Americans to the Atlantic Ocean. The name changed to Berlin in 1867, and today, it’s a quiet yet bustling suburb with nature trails, local restaurants and an active community. Community pride is one of the main reasons local Realtor Rebecca Holland of RE/MAX Realty enjoys living in Berlin. “Everyone is here for the common good,” says Holland, “They want to see the kids do well, and there’s a lot of activity centered around the school.”

Berlin features a wide breadth of housing
Berlin’s residential areas feature an eclectic mix of single-family homes. From ranch styles, split levels, Colonials and Victorians, buyers will find a few refurbished houses that date back to the late 1800s and many others from the mid-1900s through the early 2000s. Most homes have spacious yards on half-acre lots while adorned by surrounding trees. The median home price is around $350,000, with some smaller homes starting at about $300,000 and other larger, newer homes going for around $650,000. Streets like Aristone Drive are lined with sidewalks and covered with towering deciduous trees that shower the roads during the fall.

The community supports schools through small fundraisers
Pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students attend Berlin Community School, the only school in the Berlin Borough School District. The school has a B-plus on Niche and a student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. Students head to Eastern Regional High School next, served by the Eastern Camden County Regional School District. High school students can access clubs like Board Game Club, Aerospace Union Club, Math League and Science League Club. Niche gave the high school an overall A. The Berlin Community School and Home Association regularly hosts events and fundraisers throughout the year to support the students and teachers.

A day at Berlin Park
Berlin Park is the hub of outdoor recreation and community events. The park is sectioned into two parts, separated by Cross Keys Road. The south side features a playground and two ball fields that kids can play at through the Berlin Township Athletic Association. Locals enjoy a walk or bike ride through the woods along the same route the Native Americans used along the Great Egg Harbor River. The river extends to the north section of the park, where locals continue their stroll and go fishing. The park’s north side features various sports facilities where local athletes play a game of basketball, tennis, pickleball or beach volleyball. Berlin Park is also where the town holds most of its events, including Berlin Day. “Berlin Day is fun. It’s a nice community event every spring where everybody gets to meet everybody and check out all the local vendors,” Holland says.
Berlin Park spans over 150 acres and is seated between White Horse Pike and New Freedom Rd.

Berlin has several locally-owned restaurants
Locals don’t have to wait for Berlin Day to shop from local vendors. Berlin Farmer’s Market has served the community since 1940. With more than 85 stores open Thursday through Sunday, shoppers enjoy a variety of products, including homemade pies and pastries from Country Hill Amish Bakery and fresh meats from regional farms at Bringhurst Meats. Additional local shops and restaurants are along White Horse Pike, Berlin’s main road. Residents often grab American fair in the 1950 atmosphere of The Berlin Diner, an area favorite since 1994, voted by locals as one of South Jersey’s best diners from 2010 to 2019 through the Courier Post’s readers’ choice awards. Filomena Cucina Rustica is a hit for Italian cuisine, featuring homemade gnocchi and live music every weekend. Residents bring their own beers and catch a live concert at The Vault. Locals head to Berlin Circle Plaza to shop, which features ShopRite, Marshalls and more.

Heading into Philly
Locals can access the NJ Transit system, and several bus stops are along White Horse Pike. Berlin is about 21 miles outside the heart of Philadelphia, and when commuters are driving into the city, they commonly hop on Highway 42. In case of an emergency, locals have access to the Virtua Emergency Department off White Horse Pike. And if locals need to catch a flight, they take the 25-mile trip to the Philadelphia International Airport.
Berlin residents can easily travel to center city Philadelphia or Atlantic City on NJ Transit.
