A historic community know for it's pivotal role in Birmingham's Civil Rights Movement
East Thomas, along with the rest of the greater Smithfield community, is considered the birthplace of Birmingham's Civil Rights Movement. During the 1940s, Black professionals and political activists began building bungalows and ranch-style homes in the previously 'White' East Thomas neighborhood. Just 2 miles from Downtown Birmingham, the neighborhood notoriously nicknamed 'Dynamite Hill' became "the first place that was bombed in the Birmingham City bombings," Thomasine Jackson says. The lifelong resident and current neighborhood association president, Jackson grew up in East Thomas during the height of the Civil Rights Era and never plans to leave. Today, "It's a really quiet neighborhood, where everybody knows everybody on their block, and we all look out for one another," she says. "We really are the neighborhood that cares; if something happens on your block, the neighbors are always going to come out and see how they can help you."

Historic bungalows and ranch-style homes
East Thomas’ post-war homes sit side-by-side along modified grid-pattern streets. Narrow-riddled sidewalks climb gently sloping streets throughout the neighborhood, passing by original bungalows and ranch-style homes along the way. These modest, aging homes stand as a testament to the neighborhood’s resilience, with sturdy brick exteriors originally intended to minimize damage from the KKK bombings. As of 2024, about 64% of the 688 homes are owned by full-time residents, many of whom grew up in East Thomas. Compared to the $275,000 downtown condos, homes here are relatively affordable, with most listing between $50,000 to $100,000.

Five-minute car ride from Downtown Bham
While fixed route buses are available on Highway 78, Jackson says, “you're just five minutes from Downtown in the car and if you’re in good shape, you can walk there in like 25 minutes." Drivers can hop on the highway, which sits along the west border, and immediately get on Interstate 20 to arrive in Birmingham’s Central Business District.

A.H. Parker High pioneered Birmingham's integrated education system
Children attend Birmingham City Schools. Preschoolers can begin at Tuggle Elementary and move to Wilkerson Middle in sixth grade. While Niche rates these schools a C-minus, A. H. Parker High scores a solid C. Parker was established in 1900 as Birmingham's first high school for Black students. Today, Jackson says it remains "a main hub for the community," bringing families together for Friday night football games and seasonal student-led musicals.

A neighborhood walking trail connects to East Thomas Park
East Thomas is home to "Birmingham's first ever walking trail that connects to our regional trail system," Jackson says. Named after a former resident and Civil Rights activist, Dorothy Spears Greenway is a mile-long, paved pathway leading straight to the baseball field at East Thomas Park. Kids can run around 22 acres of open green space here and then cool off in the swimming pool.
