Walkable streets and access to downtown in the Capital District
Just north of downtown Bismarck, the Capital District offers easy access to major employers and outdoor recreation. Home to the North Dakota State Capitol, the neighborhood has walkable, sidewalk-lined streets and attractive home prices. The State of North Dakota is the largest employer in the Bismarck area, and the state departments of health, transportation and human services are all located in the Capital District. “It’s a very walkable part of town,” says Shirley Thomas, a local Realtor with Bianco Realty who has sold many homes in the area. “You have sidewalks throughout the neighborhood, and a lot of people walk to work at the capitol or walk to downtown to shop or run errands. It’s a very convenient area and you’re basically in the middle of the city, so you can get a lot of places fast.”
Attractive home prices and walkable Bismarck streets
Modest ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and bungalows sit close together on small lots, and most were built between the early 1900s and the 1950s. Oaks, maples and evergreens line the neighborhood's streets and dot front yards, providing shade in the summer months. “Affordability is another big draw to the Capital District,” says Thomas. “Homes here tend to be cheaper compared to the Bismarck average.” Quaint cottages in need of some TLC range from $50,000 to around $180,000. Move-in-ready homes range can go for $180,000 to $450,000, with prices increasing alongside square footage and modern upgrades. One to two-bedroom condos range from $120,000 to $250,000.
A popular community park and riverside walking trails
Lions Park is on the east side of the Capital District and is a popular spot for walking and picnicking. The park has paved paths, tennis courts, a disc golf course and the Hillside Aquatic Complex, a community pool with slides and concessions, open from June through August. The public, 18-hole, par-69 Tom O’Leary Golf Course has verdant fairways lined with mature trees. The paved Riverfront Trail winds alongside the Missouri River for 3 miles just a short drive west of the neighborhood.
Winter weather and transportation access
In the winter months, North Dakota is known for its heavy snowstorms, with an average of 50 inches of snow each year. The city’s public works department maintains over 1,500 street miles with snowplows, but many locals opt for four-wheel drive vehicles.
Bis-Man Transit operates six fixed bus routes across the city, with nearby stops on North Third Street and East Avenue C. Interstate 94 can take drivers east and west across the state to communities like Fargo and Dickinson.
Unique elective offerings at Bismarck High School
Will-Moore Elementary School is within a mile of most of the area’s homes and earns a B-minus grade from Niche. Also with a B-minus, Wachter Middle School has a wide variety of elective courses, including weight training, exploring agriculture and lifetime fitness and recreation. The B-plus-rated Bismarck High School offers dual credit courses through Bismarck State College. The high school also has over 40 clubs and extracurriculars for students to consider, from figure skating and gymnastics to media club and Science Olympiad. The Bismarck Veterans Memorial Library lies just south of the Capital District and has a variety of community programs including book clubs, English language workshops and toddler story times.
Proximity to local eateries and supermarkets
Most of the area’s homes are less than 2 miles from downtown Bismarck, allowing for easy access to shops, restaurants, employers and numerous Sanford Health clinics. Arrowhead Plaza has a small selection of businesses, including Mocha Mommas, which serves coffee, tea and crepes. A few doors down, Walrus Restaurant is a local favorite serving an eclectic mix of lunch and dinner fare, from specialty flatbreads to hand-cut ribeye. The eatery also offers over 30 rotating beers on tap. The CraftCade is a short drive south, with retro arcade games, pizza and handhelds. For grocery shopping, locals can go to the nearby Family Fare Supermarket, Target or Natural Grocers.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
