Walkable streets and nearby conveniences in Miller

Miller is a small, walkable neighborhood with easy access to major thoroughfares, recreation and the businesses of State Street, close to both Bismarck and the North Dakota State Capital. “In Miller, you have quiet streets and are within a short walk of the nearest elementary school and community park,” says Austin Muth, a local Realtor with Genesis Realty. “You’re in a great location for shopping and are less than 15 minutes from each end of Bismarck.”

Attractive homes for first time buyers and retirees

Split-level, ranch-style homes and bi-levels line the streets of Miller, most featuring attached two-car garages and small fenced-in back yards. “The neighborhood is great for first-time buyers and retirees,” Muth says. “You get smaller single-family homes with attractive price points and twin homes with single-story living. "The majority of houses in the area were built between the 1960s and 1990s. First-time buyers are attracted to the area for its price tags, with the median home price roughly $30,000 lower than the city’s median. Single-family homes range from $240,000 to $390,000, while condos and townhouses can go for $180,000 to $350,000.

Extracurriculars and dual enrollment at Legacy High School

Local families are served by Robert Place Miller Elementary School, which earns a B-plus grade from Niche. Simle Middle School receives a B-minus and has a variety of elective course offerings, including exploring world cultures, agriculture and weight training. The B-rated Legacy High School partners with Bismarck State College for its dual enrollment classes, with around 30 courses offering college credit. High schoolers can also participate in extracurriculars ranging from law club to Science Olympiad.

Nearby restaurants and amenities on State Street

State Street lies just west of the neighborhood and is home to a handful of local and chain eateries. Bearscat Bakehouse offers coffee, donuts and other baked goods, while Ichiban Ramen serves a variety of Japanese cuisine, from sushi rolls and stir fry to hibachi and specialty ramen. A few blocks south, Stonehome Brewing Company has dozens of house-made beers on tap that can be enjoyed alongside a stone oven pizza. The Gateway Mall is also close by, with businesses ranging from clothing boutiques to furniture stores. Shoppers can pick up their groceries a short drive north at Costco or Walmart.

Outdoor recreation from trails to athletic facilities

Optimist Family Park has a playground, picnic shelters, sand volleyball courts and a basketball court. From East Capitol Avenue residents can access the paved Hay Creek Trail, which winds for over 5 miles throughout the north end of Bismarck and connects with the Pebble Creek Loop trail. The trail system passes alongside the 9-hole Pebble Creek Golf Course, complete with indoor and outdoor driving ranges for driving practice year-round. Less than a mile from Miller, Lions Park has athletic facilities, a skatepark, a disc golf course and the Hillside Aquatic Complex, home to a swimming pool, slides and concessions from June through August.

Summer community programs and holiday events

Once a month from June to September, locals can bring their blankets and camp chairs to Movie in the Park, a free movie showing event that rotates between city parks. Sleepy Hollow Theater and Arts Park is a non-profit outdoor art venue that showcases community theater productions and hosts art camps and classes. “There’s a lot of holiday spirit in Miller,” Muth says. “The Chmielewski family decks out their home for Christmas on Kennedy Avenue every year. It draws in people from across the city each December.”

Public transit and access to I-94

Bis-Man Transit operates six bus routes throughout the city, with nearby stops on East Divide Avenue and North 19th Street. Interstate 94 lies just north of Miller and spans east and west across North Dakota to cities like Fargo and Dickinson.
