Rural suburban living just outside Center City

Millions of people dream of working in a big city like Philadelphia, but the box-sized apartments and fast-paced urban lifestyle only appeal to some. Blackwood offers a quiet suburban escape from the busy streets of Center City. Neatly organized cul-de-sac communities center around a major state highway known locally as Black Horse Pike. This main corridor is home to Blackwood’s small downtown area and The Gloucester Premium Outlet Mall. The neighborhood’s quiet residential streets and local conveniences are just a few reasons why Center City commuters do not mind taking the hour-long bus ride home from work every day.

Paved walking trails connect cul-de-sac communities

Most homes in Blackwood are reminiscent of the quintessential American suburb during the 1960s. Split-levels and ranch-style homes with neutral-colored vinyl siding create a uniform look throughout the neighborhood’s cul-de-sac communities. Many houses have been recently renovated to feature modern kitchen appliances and contemporary interiors. Some vernacular homes on Pine Street date back to the 1920s and sit on narrow lots with backyards separated by tall trees. Over the last two decades, new traditional condominiums and brick townhomes have been built throughout Blackwood. Residential streets are connected with paved sidewalks and multi-use trails. A three-bedroom ranch-style home in the Blackwood neighborhood will usually range between $250,000 and $400,000.

The Gloucester Premium Outlets are only a short drive away

Nicholson says, “One of the things I love about Blackwood is that you never have to leave town if you don’t want to because we have everything right here.” It’s true; this little town center has all the everyday necessities, plus some of the best shopping and dining in Gloucester County. Produce Shack has been a staple grocery store for Blackwood residents for the last forty years. A few minutes up the road, Meadows Diner is a family-owned 1950s-style diner with checker-tile floors and delicious malt milkshakes. The Gloucester Premium Outlet Mall is just south of Blackwood and offers major discounts at over 90 brand-name stores.

Two-year STEAM program at Highland Regional High School

Children attend Gloucester Township public schools, beginning in kindergarten at Blackwood Elementary. After fifth grade, students transition to Charles W. Lewis Middle. Both of these schools receive an overall C-plus on Niche. Highland Regional serves ninth through twelfth graders in the Black Horse Pike Regional School District. This B-minus high school offers a two-year STEAM program for students planning to pursue careers in STEM or the fine arts.

Paved trails lead to State Street Park

Parents stroll their toddlers down the township’s paved athletic trail to play on the tot lot at State Street Park. During the spring and summer, kids gather at the park’s baseball field to practice their pitch or play a game of kickball. Many homes along the neighborhood’s west border back up to Blackwood Lake, a prime fishing location filled with common fresh-water species. On a rainy day, locals drive to the Gloucester Premium Outlets to shop and play arcade games at Dave & Buster’s.

Locals take public buses to easily access Center City

The Blackwood Medical Center is easily accessible on Black Horse Pike. This major route connects to the North-South Freeway and brings locals to the Philadelphia International Airport in about 20 minutes. Interstate 676 crosses over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge from the freeway and into Center City. While driving is always an option, Nicholson confirms that commuters usually take the public buses on Black Horse Pike. She explains, “We’re usually only fifteen minutes from the city, but in rush hour traffic, it usually takes about 45 minutes.”

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
