Boonton Township has gone through a few phases since it was settled in the 1860s. At one point, the township was a mining town and then, maybe more famously, the home of Aircraft Radio Corporation Airport, where Gen. James H. Doolittle and a team of engineers revolutionized airplane technology. Boonton Township has never lost its rural setting and forested views, which continue to be some of the reasons people move in.
“Boonton Township has a peaceful setting with rolling hills, great schools and a strong sense of community,” says Seema Wu, a Realtor at Keller Williams Metropolitan with over five years of real estate experience. The township should not be confused with the neighboring town of Boonton. “The township and the town are completely different. They have different school districts, different everything.” While there are reminders of Boonton Township’s age, like Rockaway Valley Methodist Church built in the 1840s, the area’s quiet atmosphere among the trees and easy access to nearby amenities will never go out of style.

Exploring parks and events in Boonton
“It’s a quiet, nature-focused community with hiking, biking and fishing opportunities,” Wu says. “There’s easy access to Tourne County Park, a local favorite for outdoor activities.” Visitors to Tourne County Park can follow the Tourne Yellow Trail to the park’s highest point and see the New York skyline.
Brookhollow's Barnyard hosts seasonal events like Easter egg hunts and a pumpkin patch, but the farm is also open from May to October, so visitors can pet the animals or feed them carrots. The township’s recreation soccer leagues compete at Rockaway Valley Aerodrome Fields — Johanson Memorial Fields. Sheep Hill Observatory has one of the state's largest telescopes available to the public and offers viewings every third Friday of the month.
A nesting pair of Canada Geese have settled on the banks of the Rockaway River, next to the old Morris Canal Powerville Dam at Griffith Park in Boonton Township, NJ.

Homes with expansive yards and privacy from neighbors
The defining feature of nearly every home in the township is the expansive lawns and the collection of dense trees that create a privacy barrier. Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes with three bedrooms often start in the low $600,000s and reach into the $800,000s. Homes with four bedrooms and an acre or more of land have sold between $800,000 and $1.35 million. “Home prices are generally higher than the town of Boonton but less than Mountain Lakes,” Wu says. There are no mandatory housing associations, and Boonton Township homes run on public water and sewer systems.
Mid-century split-level homes are very common across Boonton Township, NJ and can come in various states of repair.
Quiet country roads dotted with Colonial Revival style homes are a frequent sight throughout Boonton Township.

Commuters have easy access to major routes
Boonton Township may feel set apart from busy life, but residents have quick access to Interstate 287 and the NJ Transit bus stops along Myrtle Avenue. “People travel to Manhattan, and they either take the rail to Penn Station or NJ transit buses to Port Authority on 42nd Street.” The township is about 35 miles west of New York City, and it takes about an hour to reach the city by car or bus. I-287 or I-78 leads to Newark Liberty International Airport, which is about 30 miles away or a 35-minute drive with light traffic. Old Denville Road leads to Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital, a nationally recognized and award-winning facility.
Boonton Township is a quiet oasis hidden among the trees but still close to popular destinations.

Dining out in Denville or the town of Boonton
“There are little restaurants and the Kings grocery store in the township, but Denville and Mountain Lakes are right next door,” Wu says. The town of Boonton has coffee shops and locally owned restaurants along Main Street, but the Hunan Taste Chinese Restaurant and The Pasta Shop in Denville are popular dining out spots.
Boonton Township has plenty of recreation, but many head to the town of Boonton for festivals and big community events. Music on Main happens on the first Friday of June, July and August. Musicians line Main Street and serenade visitors as they pop into stores or dance in the street. Fall Fest at Birchwood Lake is a Mountain Lakes tradition where residents get together to see the peak fall foliage, play games and relax near the water.
Boonton Township residents are spoiled for choice when it comes to dining and Hapgoods in neighboring Mountain Lakes is very popular with locals.
