Fulks Run is a rural and close-knit area
Rolling farmland and pastures make up Fulks Run, a community just south of the George Washington National Forest. Locals spend their days hiking through the Blue Ridge Mountains and fishing along the North Fork Shenandoah River’s rocky shoreline. But with a deli, an elementary school and a thriving Ruritan club, Fulks Run is a bit more close-knit than the typical rural mountain town. “There’s a real sense of community here,” says Gail Mitchell, a real estate agent with Old Dominion Realty, who has sold several properties in the area. “People know their neighbors, even if their houses are miles apart.” When residents need groceries or want to go out to eat, Route 259, locally called Brocks Gap Road, connects with places like Harrisonburg, Timberville, and Broadway.
Houses sit on large lots in Fulks Run
Homes built throughout the 1960s and early 2000s dot the area’s asphalt roads. Split-level homes, cottages and contemporary cabins are all common. Lot sizes can range between 1 and 10 acres, though properties with working cattle farms and grain crops may have more land. Houses typically have two to five bedrooms and long driveways leading to garages. The median single-family price is around $500,000, which is higher than Harrisonburg's $389,000. Homeowners should be aware that the area can experience forest fires, and houses near the North Fork Shenandoah River may be at risk of flooding. The community’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score.
Hiking trails and recreation lakes are in the George Washington National Forest
Locals can easily access several fishing, swimming and hiking spots around the area. “Some people will just pull off the road and hike an unmarked trail or fish from random spots along the river,” Mitchell says. Several designated recreation spaces are also within the George Washington National Forest. The 8-mile-long Church Rock Trail, accessible off Runions Creek Road, passes by rushing cascades and unobstructed mountain views. A short half-mile trek leads to Slate Lick Lake, home to a kayak launch and stocked with brook trout and channel catfish. Locals can jump off small cliffs into the North Fork Shenandoah River’s clear water at the Blue Hole Day Use Area.
Fulks Run Ruritan Club hosts yard sales and lawn parties
The Fulks Run Ruritan Club's one-story beige building and 55-acre green space sit along Hopkins Gap Road. “Ruritan clubs are basically just community centers for really rural places,” Mitchell says. “The one in Fulks Run is mainly known for its events.” Locals sell furniture and clothes during the Fourth of July Yard Sale, while vintage cars and semi-trucks park in the grass for the car show in June. A beauty pageant, live country music and carnival games celebrate the lawn party, held the last weekend of July. Locals can rent the clubhouse for events and run around the playground year-round. Several houses of worship are in the community, many of which are Methodist or Mennonite churches.
C grades and higher for Rockingham County Public Schools
Fulks Run is zoned for Rockingham County Pubic Schools. Kids can attend Fulks Run Elementary, which gets a C grade from Niche and is located on Brocks Gap Road. They may continue to J. Frank Hillyard Middle, earning a B-minus, and B-rated Broadway High, which offers elective classes like ecology and agriculture business. Eastern Mennonite University and James Madison University are both about 20 miles south.
Locals can buy sandwiches at Fulks Run Grocery
On Brocks Gap Road, a small white stucco building houses Fulks Run Grocery, known for its country-fried ham sandwiches. The store also sells Polish pottery and some artisan groceries, like local honey and homemade jam. There’s a gas station up the street, but other than these places, Fulks Run doesn’t have any other commercial options. “If you don’t grow it, you have to drive somewhere else to buy it for the most part,” Mitchell says. Locals will find big-box grocery stores like Walmart Supercenter and Food Lion in Timberville, while pizza restaurants and bars fill downtown Broadway’s Italianate-style buildings. Both towns are less than 10 miles east of Fulks Run.
Brocks Gap Road reaches Harrisonburg
Fulks Run is a car-dependent community, as there are no sidewalks or public transportation options. These rural roads are sometimes unmarked or made of gravel. Brocks Gap Road connects with other state routes to reach Harrisonburg, about 21 miles south. Shenandoah Valley Airport, about 40 miles south, offers daily commercial flights to Charlotte. Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg is the closest hospital.
