Quiet, coastal community fit for a Rockefeller
Jekyll Island was once so exclusive invitations were required to visit. Accessible only by boat, it was the summer home of American royalty. People with names like Vanderbilt and Rockefeller built sprawling estates where they could enjoy the ocean views and mild Georgia winters. These days the island is home to a diverse mix of full- and part-time residents, drawn to its beaches, history and weather. Now connected to the mainland by a series of bridges, Jekyll Island has transformed into a vacation spot – complete with museums and fancy hotels – that some are lucky enough to call home. “No one is really from Jekyll Island,” says Wendy T. Cook, a resident and a Realtor with eXp Realty in Golden Isles. “There are some folks who grew up here, but not many. Most people come here because it’s so beautiful and so peaceful. We call it ‘the bubble’ because it feels a little detached from the rest of the world. It’s a really special place.”

1960s-era ranch-style homes are common
Jekyll Island was designated as state park in 1948, so home buyers now do not own the land their house sits on; they only own the house and pay on the land leases, which are frequently renewed.
Homes here sit on large, manicured lawns dotted with small palm trees and often feature large porches or pools in backyards. Some are clustered in subdivisions near the coastline, while others back up to Jekyll Creek to the west. Ranch-styles are common, most of them built in the 1960s and thoughtfully renovated to maintain their midcentury charm. Newer three- and four-bedroom cottages are also available. While there are homes priced over $1 million along the shoreline, most homes here are priced between $650,000 and $950,000.
Condos are also available, priced between the high $200,000s for a one-bedroom studio and the low $700,000s for three bedrooms and water views. Those living on the beach share it with massive sea turtles who return to Jekyll Island annually to lay their eggs. Residents are encouraged to keep their lights off at night and use turtle-safe flashlights on the beach during nesting season, which usually runs from May to July. Both full- and part-time residents are required to purchase an annual pass for the security gate, which sits near the entrance of the island. Regarding crime, Jekyll Island rates a 1 out of 10 on the CAP Index, three points lower than the national average.

Sun and sand at Great Dunes Beach and Driftwood Beach
Going to the beach is one of the main activities on the island. There are multiple parks with ocean access, but a favorite with families is Great Dunes Beach Park, which also has a play area, covered picnic pavilions, showers, restrooms and ample parking. It’s also one of several parks on the island that offers ADA accessibility to the sand and beach-going wheelchairs available for rent.
Driftwood Beach is another popular spot. Locals love to walk past the ancient trees gnarled and weathered from years of erosion, looking through the pieces of driftwood scattered throughout. It is a favorite of tourists, some of whom recognize it from “The Walking Dead.”
The Summer Waves Water Park also draws regular crowds from mid-May to early September and offers water slides, a lazy river, a splash pad and a wave pool. Golfers tee off at the Jekyll Island Golf Club, which offers four courses. Jekyll Island Tennis Center is also public and offers 13 clay courts under moss-draped oak trees.
