A rural neighborhood with convenience in Burrillville
Burrillville is the type of community where the pressing business at the town council meeting is regulating how many chickens can live in a yard. “Burrillville has a nice, rural character,” says Jesse Andrews, principal broker of Anchored Oak Realty. Andrews has sold real estate across Rhode Island, including in Burrillville, for more than a decade. “For the most part, you have larger parcel sizes. It’s rural, but the amenities you’d need are close by.” Covering a 10-mile-wide swath of northern Rhode Island, Burrillville allows residents to reside deep in the countryside but easily drive to stores and restaurants.

Colonial houses, ranch styles and haunted homes in Burrillville
Despite Burrillville’s rustic landscape, it has been inhabited for more than two centuries. In fact, one 18th-century farmhouse in Burrillville is famously haunted. The paranormal experiences endured by the family who lived there in the ‘70s inspired the hit horror film “The Conjuring.” However, homes across Burrillville are more likely to be un-haunted ranch homes and colonial styles. The community boasts a median lot size of more than 1 acre, so land is plentiful. Some of that land is being gobbled up for development, as many of Burrillville’s listings are raw land ready to support a newly built home. Meanwhile, there are still farms active around the town. Burrillville stands out because it maintains a rural character but nevertheless offers municipal services like trash collection, Andrews says. “Recently I had two listings in Burrillville, and they a had a ton of interest.”

Shop and dine at standout small businesses in Burrillville
A few restaurants dot the villages on Burrillville’s east side, including Wright’s Farm. The family-style restaurant has served oven-baked chicken and mounds of sides since the ‘50s. The fifth-generation family-run farm and restaurant in 2023 was named the New England Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Head east from the restaurant past a mix of pubs and diners to buy groceries from Brigido’s Fresh Market. Other shopping needs, including Walmart and Lowe’s Home Improvement, are found 6 miles east of the neighborhood in the town of North Smithfield.

Play on grass, ice or water in Burrillville
Settling down in this inland community doesn’t require giving up beach days. In the summer months, the public beach at Spring Lake is open for swimming, sunbathing and paddling. Some of the community’s expansive forests are protected nature areas where hikers may be able to spy a hawk or deer among the trees. Hunting is popular in Burrillville, so the local government advises hikers to don orange clothes during the October to May hunting seasons. Burrillville also features municipal green spaces such as Remington Park. Constructed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the park offers recreation amenities unique to the area. Locals can slip a kayak into the adjoining river or play games in the hockey rink and pickleball court.

Burrillville community events
The streets of Burrillville’s city center are where residents are drawn for the small selection of community events. In December, locals sip hot cocoa while watching Santa Claus roll into town on a fire truck. In the fall, the Burrillville Community Recreation Center teaches a dozen classes on topics from writing to playing the ukulele.
Getting around Burrillville
Cars are the chief way to navigate Burrillville’s roads. The community is crisscrossed by several state highways, including Route 107 and Route 98. The Massachusetts state line is less than 5 miles away, so crossing into the state for work isn’t too out of the way. It’s 25 miles to Providence and 60 miles to Boston, but Burrillville’s landscape has few indications that those cities are just a commute away.
