Byron Center is a rapidly growing township in Kent County

Byron Center may have grown beyond its small-town roots, but this Grand Rapids suburb is still a place of tight-knit community and tradition. Compared to nearby suburbs, Byron Center stands out for its top-rated schools and newer housing options, ranging from modest condo units to a luxury golf-course community. Low on taxes, low on traffic and connected to major highways into the city, it makes sense that new construction is cropping up throughout Byron Center. Still, the township maintains a family friendly feel, with outdoor movies at the local park and full stands at high school football games. Located less than 20 minutes south of Grand Rapids, Byron Center is a community-oriented township undergoing major growth as folks move away from the city for more elbow room.

Newer homes and lower taxes than nearby suburbs

Byron Center is one of the best spots in the Grand Rapids area to find new construction. “It's kind of blown up in the last 10 years,” says Gregg Henry with The Dune Group, who has sold several homes here. You’ll see lines of New Traditional homes along sidewalk-lined streets, and many communities have HOA fees. Price points vary based on home ages and size, including:

  • Older ranch-style homes from the mid-1900s are available from the low to high $300,000s.
  • Homes from the 1990s to the 2020s with larger floor plans range from the $400,000s to the $700,000s
  • Custom-built luxury homes with upwards of seven bedrooms might be priced from the $800,000s to over $1 million.
  • Condo units are available from the $200,000s to over the mid-$600,000s.
“For the most part, Byron Center is going to be higher-priced with some more affluent neighborhoods than in Wyoming, Kentwood and Cutlerville,” Henry says. But a benefit of Byron Center is lower taxes. Since the community is part of a township, taxes are generally lower than in nearby cities.

Standout public schools and youth sports engagement

Byron Center Public Schools is one of the highest-ranked school districts in the Grand Rapids area. The district is recognized for its strong academic performance, and offers specialty programs in STEM, robotics and the arts. “School sports are huge here,” says Peggy Sattler, the township clerk and resident of over 28 years. “There’s hockey, lacrosse, football…the recreation center has a lot of youth athletic programs, too.” Henry agrees, saying the high school football field is the place to be on Friday nights. Families can also explore private, faith-based options, including Byron Center Christian School for kindergarten through eighth grade.

Parks throughout the township create breathing room

This far south of the city, there’s more space to spread out. “People want to get around easier,” Sattler says. “It’s not as congested here. We’ve got a lot of outdoor recreation. I love the parks. They’re a huge draw.” Byron Center has several green spaces, including:

  • Whistle Stop Park is one of the most popular parks, with facilities for baseball, soccer and volleyball, as well as a fishing pond, dog park and community center with a gym.
  • Bicentennial Park is the go-to spot for pickleball, with 12 courts that were added in 2022.
  • Railside Golf Club is a private 18-hole golf course with a pool, community center and restaurant for its members.
  • Kent Trails is a 15-mile regional trail system built along an abandoned railway.

Family friendly events, including the Byron Days Festival

In addition to all the youth sports, there are plenty of family friendly activities in Byron Center. You can catch an outdoor movie at Bicentennial Park or drop the kids off for art classes at Byron Township Community Center. There’s always the big Byron Days Festival in July, which has been celebrating the area’s rural roots for almost 90 years now. “We’ll start the rides; churches do fun runs for kids; the library has a book sale… things like that,” Sattler says. “Saturday morning, we have a race, parade, more rides and music. Saturday night, there’s a big band playing live music and fireworks.”

Tanger Outlets is a large shopping destination

The area's biggest shopping destination is the Tanger Outlets. About 3 miles outside Byron Center, this open-air mall has over 80 shops and outlets, including Fossil, Nike and Ralph Lauren. However, you don’t have to leave Byron Center to run errands or even find a good restaurant. Family Fare Supermarket is right in the heart of town, and Byron Center Meats is a beloved local butcher. For dining out, you’ve got the trendy brewery atmosphere at Alebird or a homestyle diner experience at Byron Family Restaurant.
