Desirable residential neighborhood in West Cambridge
Bordered by a popular outdoor recreation area that covers nearly two hundred acres of land, Strawberry Hill is a small, yet highly desirable neighborhood situated in western Cambridge. Despite its urban location, residents here can easily walk to the sprawling Fresh Pond nature reserve and parkland that acts as the neighborhood’s northern boundary. “Fresh Pond was that driving force that connected a lot of us in the community; it’s a place of escape from a busy workday, a huge outdoor spot in the middle of the city,” says Lance Greene, a local partner with the Donahue + Greene Team at Compass and a Cambridge native. Strawberry Hill’s southern border sits adjacent to the Mount Auburn Cemetery, one of the country’s oldest arboretums and a designated National Historic Landmark. “A number of historical figures are buried at Mount Auburn, which is also considered the first royal garden cemetery in the United States,” Greene says. “One of the graves is that of Mary Baker Eddy, who was buried with a phone line to her casket – there are rumors about people hearing her phone ring above ground.” Greene also notes that Cambridge’s low taxes and well-run public services are additional highlights of the community.
Strawberry Hill is about a 20 to 25-minute drive from downtown Boston.

Year-round outdoor recreation at Fresh Pond
Residents in Strawberry Hill are conveniently located right next to Fresh Pond, which is made up of an eponymous 155-acre lake encircled by community parks, state-of-the-art playgrounds and athletic fields, the nine-hole Fresh Pond Golf Course and a series of intertwined walking paths. “The pond is actually a manmade reservoir and is responsible for much of the local water supply,” Greene says. Even when the temperature drops and snow starts to fall, Fresh Pond remains a popular outdoor recreation spot: “It’s an outstanding green space with year-round activities; in the winter months, people go for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice-skating on the lake when it freezes over.” The section of Fresh Pond bordering Strawberry Hill is the Glacken Field park area, which Greene says features tennis and basketball courts alongside a recently renovated Little League baseball complex.

Homes with distinct historic architecture line the streets
As a mostly residential neighborhood, the streets of Strawberry Hill are lined with homes that flaunt a blend of eclectic architecture. “A lot of the homes in the neighborhood are multifamily – oftentimes two-family properties and triple-deckers – which is kind of the standard home throughout the Boston area,” Greene says. “A need for single-family properties rose significantly during the pandemic, and now there’s a very low inventory in the area.” Although Strawberry Hill has seen an increase in new condominium developments along Fresh Pond Place, a vast majority of the residential properties here were built between the late 1800s and early to mid-1900s. As locals stroll along shady sidewalks, they might find anything from traditional New England-style cottages and Colonial-inspired dwellings to stately American Foursquares and Queen Anne residences, which often feature projecting bay windows and round corner towers. Both single-family and multifamily homes here tend to start around $1 million and can climb into the lower $3 million range.

Haggerty School situated at the heart of Strawberry Hill
Students here are zoned for Cambridge Public Schools and can begin their academic journeys at the Haggerty School, a pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade institution that receives an A-minus Niche rating and is located at the heart of Strawberry Hill. For grades six through eight, Rindge Avenue Upper School is an A-rated middle school; Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, or CRLS, receives an A-plus rating and, in 2024, was named in the top 20 best public high schools in the Boston area. Although these three schools tend to act as an academic pipeline for this neighborhood, location doesn’t always determine where students can attend: “Cambridge Public Schools has a pretty effective lottery system,” Greene says. There are also a handful of private schools that students can attend, including the A-plus-rated Shady Hill School and Cambridge Montessori School. However, one of the most standout aspects of all the schools in this area is the “outstanding student-to-teacher ratio,” Greene says.

Local bakeries and markets along Belmont Street
Situated between Strawberry Hill and the Mount Auburn Cemetery is the quaint Belmont Street shopping and dining area, which features a variety of local restaurants, small businesses and boutiques. “Star Market is situated right at the end of Belmont where it intersects with Mount Auburn Street,” Greene says. A grocery store, pharmacy and florist all wrapped in one, Star Market is the local go-to spot for basic food items and household necessities. Just across the street from the market is Sofra, a popular bakery and café specializing in traditional Turkish, Lebanese and Grecian cuisine. Greene also recommends stopping by Greg’s Restaurant, an Italian dining spot with an “old-school” atmosphere, Greene says. For a morning caffeine boost, residents can grab a cup to-go at Intelligentsia Coffee.

Bike lanes connect all throughout Cambridge
Sidewalks, greenway paths and recent bike lane expansions all make up Strawberry Hill’s pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. “Biking has always been a big part of the community and part of the growth in this area,” Greene says. “West Cambridge now has this massive section of interlinking bike paths that connect all throughout the city.” Residents here are an approximately 2-mile drive from Cambridge’s Harvard Square neighborhood and have convenient access to Massachusetts Route 3, which connects to the I-95 highway corridor. Less than a mile away from Strawberry Hill is Mount Auburn Hospital, a major medical center affiliated with Harvard University and the city’s first hospital. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) operates the Route 71 and 73 bus service. Boston Logan International Airport is a quick 10-mile drive east of the neighborhood.
