Historic homes stretch out from the city center
The neighborhood, just east of downtown, consists of a narrow stretch of mixed-use blocks. The southern portion is more commercial, while Foursquares, ranch-style homes and split-levels line the northern streets blocks between Cherry Avenue Northeast, which runs northbound, and Walnut Avenue Northeast, which runs south. Generally, yards get more spacious the farther they are from downtown. Most residents use street parking, as many of the homes are older, built mainly between 1900 and 1950, and often do not come with garages. Prices range from $50,000 to $150,000.

Taverns, cafes and grills
Being next door to downtown has its perks— namely that restaurants and shops are just a few blocks away. For groceries, StarkFresh Food Justice Campus is a few blocks south of the neighborhood, but for a broader selection, there’s a Giant Eagle Supermarket 3.5 miles west of the community. El Fogon Caribbean Grill serves authentic Dominican food inside a brick building with a colorful, modern atmosphere. Muggswigz Coffee & Tea, one of four locations, has a bit of an old English library feel and serves in-house roasted brews. Open since 1902, Bender’s Tavern is a popular, high-end restaurant known not only for its fresh seafood—flown-in daily— but also as the birthplace of the National Football League. It was here within the oak-paneled walls in 1920 that Ralph Hay and Jim Thorpe met and discussed starting what would eventually become a $190 billion enterprise 100 years later. “They celebrated with dinner and drinks,” says John Jacob, fourth-generation owner of Bender’s Tavern. He adds that Thorpe, a pioneering football player and an Olympic gold medalist who was the NFL's first president, was a regular at the restaurant; “He was known to buy a bottle of whiskey for himself and a bottle of whiskey for his friends at Bender’s.”

Historic parks and football history
Established in 1894, Nimisilla Park is a historic, tree-shaded spot with a playground, basketball courts, chess and covered picnic tables. Just east is Cooks Lagoon Park, surrounded by red maples and white oaks, with a small fishing pond at its center that feeds into Nimishillen Creek. Centennial Plaza is an outdoor amphitheater known as the heart of the Hall of Fame City. “The plaza was a $12 million dollar project by the city of Canton and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, created in honor of football,” says Jacob. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is about 3 miles west of the community.
