With historic homes selling for about half the Canton average, and a location near downtown, Southwest Canton provides more affordable homes near city amenities. Though mainly a residential area, there are a few small businesses at the heart of the community, such as Bill’s Books & More and Athens Restaurant. Recently, some of the local schools have closed, which has affected families, though new facilities are planned. “We are trying to turn things around,” says Bob Grier, who has worked at the J. Babe Stearn Community Center for 30 years.

Historic Foursquares and bungalows
Within the gridded residential streets, Foursquare homes and bungalows sit close together. Short front porches with walkways to sidewalks are common. Most homes were built between the late 1800s and the 1920s and include features such as wrap-around porches and balconies. Homes in need of renovation range from $30,000 to $50,000, and turn-key homes sell for $60,000 to $120,000, similar to surrounding neighborhoods but below the norm for the metro area.

The Canton City School District
The Canton City School District serves Southwest Canton. The district has closed two schools in recent years, one of which served the neighborhood, though the district is moving forward with a combination of federal and local funds to build a new elementary school in Southwest Canton and another in the northwest. Students in kindergarten through third grade can attend Cedar Elementary, which received a C-minus on Niche. Students can continue their education at McGregor Intermediate School and Crenshaw Middle School, scoring B-minus and C-minus, respectively. Students can also attend McKinley Senior High School, which received a C. McKinley High is known for its football team, the McKinley Bulldogs, who have famously rivaled Washington High’s Massillon Tigers since 1894.For a nearby private option, Heritage Christian School on Sixth Street offers scholarships through the state of Ohio for those who qualify for EdChoice. Students may also apply to attend public charter schools, such as Beacon Academy or Stark High School, located along 14th Street.

Unique local shopping and dining spots
Central to the neighborhood is Athens Restaurant, serving casual Greek food in a white-columned building with an eclectic, vintage feel. “They’re great— sometimes we have them prepare food for school events,” says Pam Moody, the central office coordinator at Heritage Christian School. Harmon's Pub is a popular sports bar serving classic pub fare just north of the neighborhood across Tuscarawas Street West. Bill’s Books and More, a neighborhood fixture since 2007, offers a wide selection of comics, graphic novels and figurines. For groceries and other necessities, residents will need to drive or take the bus. The Giant Eagle supermarket is about 1 mile west, while StarkFresh Grocery Store, a local nonprofit grocery store, is about 1.5 miles east and 15 minutes by bus. “We sell locally grown vegetables and meats at break-even prices,” says Douglas Colmery, the development director of StarkFresh. “We always try to have free bread available, and customers who receive SNAP benefits can get half price on produce.”
