Neighborhood association fosters community
Early 20th-century homes and a close-knit community contribute to the charm of Vassar Park, located less than a mile from downtown Canton. Realtor Tara Nelson, who has worked with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services since 2017, credits the Vassar Park Neighborhood Association (VPNA), which she says is “one of the best.” The VPNA is in constant communication with residents—both in person and through their Facebook group—and organizes volunteer clean-ups and community events. “It brings back a sense of community,” Nelson says. “There’s not too many places where you can knock on your neighbor’s door and bring them a plate of food.”

Brick road adds character to the neighborhood
While many of the streets in Vassar Park are black-top, 18th Street is made of red brick. This original brick was laid between 1875 and 1925. There is some street parking, but many properties have driveways and garages. A line of oak trees separates the roads from thin sidewalks. Residents stroll past homes built in the 1920s and grassy lawns decorated with colorful flowers and bushes. Tudor and Colonial Revivals sit alongside bungalows and Foursquares that boast Craftsman influences. “All of the homes have so much character,” Nelson says. Prices for three- to four-bedroom houses typically range from $125,000 to $225,000, lower than much of the Canton Metro Area.

Canton City Schools serve Vassar Park
As part of the Canton City School District, students can start at Gibbs Elementary School before heading to Crenshaw Middle School. Both schools receive a C-minus from Niche. McKinley Senior High School earns a C and is home to the Bulldogs. The school is one half of a high school football rivalry with the Massillon Tigers that started in 1894. The Bulldogs won the first game and over 50 of the games they’ve played against each other since. Malone University is a private Christian university less than a mile outside the neighborhood, with more than 50 undergraduate areas of study.

All three of these major roads connect with Interstate 77. There are a few Stark Area Regional Transit Authority bus stops along the neighborhood’s edge. Akron-Canton Airport is about a 9-mile drive, although international travelers fly out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, which is about 64 miles away. The closest emergency room is at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, about 2 miles away.

Parks and arts in Canton
With parks surrounding the neighborhood, there are plenty of recreational options. At its center is the playground at the leafy Vassar Hill Park. The nearby Weis Park has a colorful play structure for kids to enjoy, as well as a baseball field, tennis courts and shuffleboard courts. It's a short walk to the north branch of the Stark Library, where readers can join a book club and browse the extensive catalog. “You’ll see people there who go in every day and read their paper or sit and have their coffee,” says Stephanie Cargill, former communications director of Stark County Public Libraries. “They know their patrons by name.” Downtown has a number of museums including The Canton Museum of Art, which also hosts classes, including ceramics and painting. At the Pro Football Hall of Fame, interactive and educational displays detail football’s extensive history and highlight its star players.

Good eating by Canton Centennial Plaza
Walkie Talkie Espresso & Coffee, with unique flavors like Strawberry Donut and Rosemary, is a neighborhood favorite for morning coffee. Most residents head downtown for dining and entertainment. Restaurants surround the Canton Centennial Plaza, a popular event venue with movie nights, concerts and Cleveland Browns viewings. Bender’s Tavern serves American fare but is best known for its extensive wine list, while George’s Lounge is famous for its unique burgers, such as The Big O’Nesto, which comes with fried egg and bacon. Friends can bring their dogs and get a drink from Muskellunge Brewing Company, which names each beer after a fish. “You’ve got shopping up north and downtown south, so you’ve got the best of both worlds,” Nelson says. The closest grocery store is Giant Eagle. Target, Walmart and Lowe’s are all within 7 miles of the neighborhood.
