Cantonment is an unincorporated suburban community close to the Florida/Alabama border. While the area started as a small rural community, it has seen rapid development over the past 25 years. The quaint town offers plenty of outdoor attractions, popular local businesses and well-rated schools.
Cantonment is highlighted by its diverse mix of recreational opportunities. The Perdido River Wildlife Management Area is a 6,000-acre reserve with a nearly 18-mile hiking trail with views of the local flora and fauna. The wildlife area also has spots for camping and people can go paddling along the Perdido River Canoe Trail. The Muscogee Mountain Bike Trails provide several miles of challenging courses through the area’s dense forests. Carver Park is a small greenspace with a playground, basketball court and picnic area. Badger Circle Park is another small green space in the middle of neighborhood homes that has lots of playground equipment and a picnic area. The Escambia River, 2 miles east of Cantonment, is the fourth largest river in Florida and was named the best river to fish in by the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife. Common species in the river include bass, sunfish and catfish. Drive 20 miles south and enjoy miles of sandy shoreline along Pensacola Beach.
Homes here are congregated along a traditional suburban grid structure with cul-de-sacs. Cantonment mostly features homes built within the past 25 years, but some original rural styles from the 20th century infrequently go on the market. For vehicle parking, homes have driveways, and some styles also include garages. Cantonment homes typically sell for between $250,000 to $550,000.
Escambia County Public Schools serves the neighborhood’s students with a collection of well-rated schools. Kids may start at Kingsfield Elementary School, which gets a B rating from Niche, before transitioning to Ransom Middle School, which has a B-minus. Students may then attend J.M. Tate High School, which earns a B-plus from Niche and offers several career academy programs including agriscience, game simulation, and veterinary science.
Northgate Plaza is a small shopping center off State Highway 29 with a Grocery Advantage and a Family Dollar. There’s an additional shopping center further south on the 29 with a Winn-Dixie grocery store and a Dollar General. Cantonment Mercantile is a local store that sells general goods, animal feed and has an in-house bakery and ice cream shop. There are also popular local restaurants in Cantonment like Porky's for pizza and Mom’s Place for soul food.
Because of its rural roots, Cantonment is car-dependent, and Interstate 10 and Highway 29 are the closest connections nearby. The Pensacola International Airport is 12 miles south of the community and takes about 30 minutes by car. Plenty of job opportunities can be found in the nearby coastal city of Pensacola, located 15 miles south of Cantonment.
