West Casper embraces the region’s natural landscape
In a city full of green space, West Casper places residents in a prime position for outdoor recreation. This section of Wyoming’s second-largest city unfurls beside a piece of the North Platte River. The homes here sometimes come with larger lots than in other parts of Casper, and they’re close to multiple parks, trails and golf courses. “With all the parks and things, people are outside a lot here,” says Casper native Lisa Engebretsen, the broker and owner at Forefront Real Estate, with 15 years of realty experience.
Recreation opportunities abound on land and water
The North Platte River is a signature feature of this area, and locals can access it from spots like Amoco Park. The park is where people can drop a kayak in the water or drop a line to fish. A portion of the 11-mile Platte River Trail also runs through it. Fort Caspar Campground & RV Park, farther west on the river, has two fishing ponds and is open year-round. The inland Nancy English Park includes a playground and a sliver of the Garden Creek Greenway trail.
Engebretsen says there are many golfers in the area. West Casper’s Three Crowns Golf Club has an 18-hole course open to the public, and Paradise Valley Country Club is a private option. Those looking to get out of the city can head 12 miles south to Casper Mountain, which has over 50 miles of trails. “The mountain is a big draw,” Engebretsen says. “A lot of people do like to go hiking on the mountain.”
West Casper properties offer flexibility and relative affordability
Properties in West Casper range from ranch- and bungalow-style homes in sidewalk-lined subdivisions to sprawling custom builds on multiple acres. Some houses sit right along the North Platte River. “Anything that’s on the water will sell immediately,” Engebretsen says. “It’s hard to find a riverfront property here, just because they sell immediately.” A common thread on this side of Casper is the lack of HOAs, which can be a boon for those who have recreational vehicles. “Everybody here has toys,” Engebretsen says. “Everybody here has campers and boats and four-wheelers and side-by-sides. So it’s common to look for space to store those.” Most of West Casper’s properties sell for $200,000 to $600,000. The pricing is lower in this area because it's more remote than some other sections of the city. “You could take an identical house from the east side and put it on the west side, and it automatically is $25,000 cheaper,” Engebretsen says.
The annual fair is a tradition in West Casper
The fairgrounds for the Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo are in West Casper. The fair runs over about a week each July, and Engebretsen says it’s a huge draw. The event includes multiple nights of Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association competition, carnival rides and a parade through downtown Casper.
Groceries, gear and steakhouse dining near Mountain Plaza
West Casper doesn’t have as wide a selection of commercial attractions as Central Casper and East Casper , but residents still have multiple nearby places to grab a bite or to shop. There’s a Walmart Supercenter in the Mountain Plaza shopping center. Mountain Plaza is down the street from Tractor Supply Co. and Wagner's Outdoor Outfitters, a store for hunting and fishing gear. West Casper also has Albertsons and Smith’s supermarkets. Restaurants in the area include Silver Fox Steakhouse, which Engebretsen says is very popular; its bacon knots appetizer is a hit. “Silver Fox is more of a high-end restaurant,” Engebretsen says. The breakfast burritos are a draw at Poncho's Mexican Food, and Buffalo Bean is a spot for smoothies and coffee.
Families can pick their schools in the Natrona district
The city of Casper is part of Natrona County School District 1, a system with a B grade on Niche. The district allows students to enroll in schools of their choosing. Possibilities in West Casper include the B-plus-rated Paradise Valley Elementary, where there’s a dual-language immersion program in English and Mandarin. Students can continue the program at the B-rated CY Middle, which also offers sports teams. Natrona County High is B-rated and has career and technical education programs in topics like agriscience and business.
Nearby airport provides a connection to trips out of town
West Casper residents are closer than others in the city to the Casper/Natrona County International Airport, roughly 9 miles away. United Airlines operates multiple flights to Denver through this airport daily, and the Denver International Airport has direct service to over 200 destinations. Interstate 25 is also close and is a way to reach other communities in the region, such as Douglas, about 50 miles away. The Banner Wyoming Medical Center main campus is 3 miles away on Second Street in Central Casper , and is the state's largest hospital.
