Small community of mill workers preserves the past
The Columbia River Highway trails through the half-mile stretch that is Westport, passing not much more than a fire station, a gas station, a coffee trailer and one local restaurant. But for the mill workers whose families have lived in the close-knit community for generations, the old homes, the remnants of industrial history and the recreation on Westport Slough are just enough. “It’s a quiet, nice area,” says Amy Trull, a Realtor with John L. Scott Real Estate in Scappoose who previously covered Columbia County with a local newspaper for years. “It has Westport Boat Ramp, which the county has revamped for kayaking.”

Westport Logging Tunnel—a remainder of Westport history
The Westport Boat Ramp now provides boarding floats, short-term, tie-up docks and a kayak launch considered accessible by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Surrounded by verdant forests, Westport also has several nearby trails, one of which weaves along the rocky bank of Plympton Creek, where fish migrate from the Columbia River and the Westport Slough.
Farther inland, hikers can explore the Westport Logging Tunnel in a forested sliver beside the current Columbia River Highway. A smaller road once built as the original highway leads to the abandoned logging tunnel—believed to have been constructed sometime in the 1880s; it’s one of the oldest surviving railroad tunnels in the Pacific Northwest. Though it was carved for ox hauling timber from the forest to the river, the tunnel was eventually expanded to accommodate railroads and now serves as a historical site of the community’s past.
