Oak Forest
Suburban Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County 28215

Midcentury homes with plenty of space
Oak Forest is anchored by East W. T. Harris Boulevard, but residences have plenty of exits to other roads. Some subdivisions have sidewalks, though streets are usually wide and quiet enough for pedestrians. Trees provide plenty of shade, and privacy too. Most midcentury homes in Oak Forest follow brick ranch-style designs, with the occasional split-level. Two-story New Traditional builds have been popping up over the past few years in the neighborhood’s remaining undeveloped lots. Whatever the house a buyer picks, they can expect to have plenty of elbow room. “Lots are a bit bigger here compared to cookie-cutter neighborhoods or ones with newer constructions. These lots give residents more privacy, which they like,” Leland says. The median parcel size is about a quarter of an acre. Prices for detached homes typically go from $250,000 to $400,000. Townhouses can be found along Briarhill Drive, selling for between $160,000 and $180,000.A huge park, a small park and escape rooms in between
Devonshire Park is a small green triangle right by Devonshire Elementary with two playgrounds for big and little kids and picnic tables. Reedy Creek Park offers even more outdoor space. Visitors can navigate the park’s 10 miles of wooded trails by foot or bike, play disc golf on the 18-hole course, cast lines in ponds or Reedy Creek or hold a family celebration in one of the park’s many pavilions. For some indoor fun, residents can try their luck at escaping the interactive puzzle rooms of The Box Escape Room Experience.Oak Forest schools are within walking distance of most homes
Devonshire Elementary and Cochrane Collegiate Academy, which serves sixth through 12th grade students, are centrally located within Oak Forest. Both schools receive C ratings from Niche. Plans are underway to replace Cochrane Collegiate Academy with a new campus on site. The school is also the location of the iMeck Academy, a program focusing on digital marketing and multimedia design. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte lies 6 miles up East W. T. Harris Boulevard.Celebrating the community’s Latin American heritage
Oak Forest residents are involved in numerous Latin American celebrations across The Queen City, such as the Charlotte Peruvian Festival. Taking place at Camp North End, the festival commemorates Peru’s independence with live music, dancing, performers in traditional clothing and plenty of food.Easy access to East W. T. Harris Boulevard and several CATS buses
East W. T. Harris Boulevard bounds the neighborhood to the east. This thoroughfare takes commuters to Interstates 85 and 485. Uptown Charlotte is about 8 miles west, though residents can expect heavy traffic during peak hours. Oak Forest is well-served by buses, with a few Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) lines running through the neighborhood such as 23, which goes right to Uptown.International groceries and eateries abound
When it comes to eating and shopping, Oak Forest residents are spoiled for choice, and not without cause. “Oak Forest is very culturally mixed, and that’s why people like it. There’s a lot of Latino-owned restaurants and shops, but there are Vietnamese and Korean businesses too,” Leland says. Leland notes Compare Foods Supermarket's grocery selection includes various Latin American specialty products. Residents are also near two Food Lion locations. Diners can enjoy pupusas and baleadas at Restaurante y Panaderia Salvadoreña and grab baked goods to go. Parkway House serves up an array of homespun Southern comfort dishes, from black-eyed peas to mac and cheese. Religious houses of worship in the area reflect this cultural diversity, too. They include a Catholic, a Spanish-speaking Seventh Day Adventist church, a Korean Presbyterian church, a Vietnamese Pentecostal church and a Buddhist temple, in addition to the Islamic Society of Greater Charlotte, which serves as both a community center and masjid.
