Architectural variety in Pine Hill
Homes in Pine Hill are often fronted by grassy lawns and sometimes separated from neighbors by small thickets of trees. The streets are lined with a variety of architecture, which primarily includes Colonial-style homes, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes. “Housing is very mixed,” Piacenza says. “The aesthetic here is all different decades. You have a lot of older homes, because Chelmsford’s an old town. There are homes from the 1700s there, but there are also brand-new constructions.” Prices can vary just as much, with single-family properties usually ranging from about $700,000 to nearly $1.4 million or higher. Some condos also sit in Pine Hill and can cost between $400,000 and $500,000. The neighborhood has yet to receive a CAP Index Crime Score.Fishing, swimming and boating on the water
The closest established green space is Friendship Park, which sits on the southern boundary of Pine Hill and features an inclusive playground. Just west, Nabnasset Pond accommodates fishing and swimming while also offering a boat ramp for watercraft and beach for visitors. “Recreation is all around,” Piacenza says. “If you live in town, there is tons of stuff to do. You can pop your kayak in and go pretty much everywhere.” Freeman Pond sits to the north and prohibits motorized boats, but accommodates swimming in some areas, as well as kayaks and canoes. The Merrimack River is also popular for boating and fishing. Just south, the Lime Kiln Quarry has several miles of trails for hikers.State recognition for Chelmsford High School
Charles D. Harrington Elementary School receives a B-plus rating from Niche, spanning kindergarten through fourth grade. McCarthy Middle School receives an A-minus, while Chelmsford High School garners an A rating from Niche. In 2024, Chelmsford High received School of Recognition honors from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for achievement and progress toward accountability targets. All three schools are part of Chelmsford Public Schools and sit in northern Pine Hill.Events in Chelmsford and Lowell
The Chelmsford Center for the Arts sits just south of Pine Hill and hosts concerts, karaoke nights and private events. Chelmsford proper and Lowell are popular destinations for events and entertainment. “There is always stuff going on in both towns,” Piacenza says. “Lowell has a million festivals and is very diverse, culturally, so there is always something going down.”Commuters head southward to Boston
Route 3 is also known as the Northwest Expressway and makes up the northern boundary of Pine Hill, while Interstate 495 runs along the southeastern-facing side of the neighborhood. “Pine Hill is between the expressway and 495, which makes it a prime location,” Piacenza says. “128 is a couple miles down, and that’ll take you right into Waltham or into the city.” Route 3 is the beginning of the drive to Boston, which sits between 30 and 35 miles south, while Worcester sits around 40 miles southwest.Nearby shopping and tax-free options in New Hampshire
Locals have a couple of stops for ice cream nearby, with Sully’s Ice Cream Stand in northern Pine Hill and the Country Creamery & Coffeehouse close to Friendship Park to the southwest. Just southeast, in Chelmsford, residents can stop at Bertucci’s Italian Restaurant or Madras Grill Indian Restaurant for international dishes. Fishbones of Chelmsford serves up seafood, and several pizza places sit in the area as well. “It’s right outside of downtown Chelmsford proper,” Piacenza says. “You can go out the back way and right into Westford, which has tons of restaurants. It’s got everything.”Lowell, which sits nearby along the Merrimack, offers more options. “I love Lowell for going out to eat,” Piacenza says. “There are always new pop-up restaurants and always new things happening. There are new Asian food places where the food is off the hook.” A Hannaford and Walmart sit just across the expressway from Pine Hill, and a Market Basket and Stop & Shop are located just east down the road. Just north, across the New Hampshire state line, Pheasant Lane Mall is a popular stop for shopping without sales tax. Stores there include Trader Joe’s, Market Basket and Costco.
