Waterfront homes along the Chester River and Chesapeake Bay

Aptly named, Kent Narrows is a narrow strip of land surrounding Highway 50, just east of the Bay Bridge in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. Waterfront homes here sit alongside marinas and restaurants overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and the Chester River. The neighborhood has a mix of full-time residents and snowbirds who move in for the summer, many of whom prefer boats to cars when getting around town. “Everything kind of revolves around the water – dining at waterfront restaurants, drinking at waterfront bars, fishing, boating, golfing as well,” says resident and Realtor Julia Stevens with Realty Navigator.

Marinas, Long Point Park and the Cross Island Trail

Living in Kent Narrows is all about being along the water, and marinas like Safe Harbor Narrows Point and Cedar Point Marina provide places for residents to dock their boats. “If you have one of those fishing boats and you go crabbing, you can easily get a whole bushel of Maryland blue crabs in two or three hours,” Stevens says. “A lot of people are boaters here.” Long Point Park is the neighborhood’s sole green space. It features a 1/3-mile paved walking path alongside native grass and wildflowers and an entrance to the nearly 7-mile Cross Island Trail that travels east-west through Chester to end at Terrapin Park in Stevensville.

Getting across the Bay Bridge to Annapolis, Baltimore and D.C.

Kent Narrows is a car-dependent neighborhood off Highway 50, 19 miles from Annapolis, 46 miles from Baltimore and 47 miles from D.C. To get to any of these destinations, residents have to drive over the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bay Bridge, which, according to Stevens, intimidates some drivers due to its steeping height nearly 200 feet above water. “The Bay Bridge is one of the scariest bridges in America,” she says. “I personally know of people who absolutely refuse to drive the Bay Bridge. They will hire a service who picks you up on one end and drives your car across the bridge. People commute from here to Baltimore or D.C., and they get to work every Monday through Friday doing that.” Commuters can also take the MTA Commuter Bus from Kent Narrows over the Bay Bridge to get to Baltimore or D.C. The nearest medical center to Kent Narrows is the UM Shore Emergency Center at Queenstown, 6 miles east. The closest airport is Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, 39 miles northwest.
