Workers come for proximity but stay for community
In Jefferson Park, everything is about community. Though the neighborhood spans across the Interstate and is home to over 26,000 people, residents in Jefferson Park come together for local events at the park and stay for generations. “A lot of people who grew up here end up coming back to the neighborhood,” says Realtor Edith Schell and Jefferson Park resident with Christine’s International Real Estate. With close proximity to major roads and affordable single-family homes available within city limits, this area is popular with city employees and commuters. “It has really strong roots to the city. A lot of city workers live out here,” Schell says. “Anyone who works for the city has to live in the city limits, so you have a lot of police and firemen and teachers.” At the end of the day, people get to come home to Jefferson Park, where the community gets together for local clubs and days spent outside at its many parks.

Affordable bungalows and condos throughout Jefferson Park
Jefferson Park’s ambling tree-lined streets feature a mix of single-family homes and condos, but the single-family options are the main attraction. “Compared to other parts of the city where you have to buy a condo, over here you can buy a single-family home,” Schell says. Streets feature rows of siding Dutch Colonials and bungalows with dormer windows. “Most houses have a detached garage and a small yard, so you do feel like you have your own little private spot,” Schell says. Pedestrians can stroll along the shaded sidewalks and access their homes via the concrete steps leading up to the front door. Interspersed amongst the single-family houses are brick Georgian condos, often housing only two units in each complex. These and the detached single-family homes list between $300,000 and $475,000. Some new construction listings between $700,000 and $800,000 are also available around Jefferson Park, identifiable through New Traditional and contemporary styles.

Jefferson Park's Polish grocery store and BBQ joint
With an active and involved community in Jefferson Park, it’s no surprise that there are so many local restaurants and businesses favored by residents. Colletti’s originally opened in 1946, serving classic Italian favorites, but is best known for their ribs. Fans of barbeque can head over to Earl’s BBQ, which also features salmon and portobello options alongside pulled pork and chicken. Weston’s Coffee and Tap Co. serves Metropolis Coffee, a local favorite across Chicagoland, and a rotating beer tap. While residents can stop in the Jewel-Osco 1.3 miles away along North Central Avenue or the Mariano’s in Jefferson Park for groceries, Andy’s Deli and Mikolajczk Sausage Shop sells specialty Polish foods, like pierogis, baked goods and Polish sausages.

Jeff Fest in the summer and local community clubs
Jefferson Park’s social calendar features everything from small community gatherings to annual festivals. “There’s lots of community involvement. Lots of block parties. Lots of book clubs. Lots of baseball leagues.” Schell says. “These are things that drive the community.” Twice a month throughout the Summer, Sunday Market at Jefferson Memorial Park features live music and stalls of artisan goods. Jeff Fest is the community’s annual summer get-together, with food and vendors serving the community and local bands playing. Taste of Polonia draws attention from beyond Jefferson Park, celebrating Polish culture with Polish food, beer, cooking classes and other festivities.
Walk to the parks and hike in the woods
Folks can find parks throughout the community and residential areas. “They love being able to walk to the park,” Schell says. Jefferson Memorial Park spans almost 8 acres and offers multiple baseball fields and tennis courts. In the summer, kids can cool off in the splash pad by the playground and everyone can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool here. The fieldhouse offers indoor athletic facilities and hosts regular arts and crafts classes and local clubs to keep the community involved. Maintained by the Forest Preserves of Cook County, Thaddeus S. Lechowicz Woods is the local hiking and biking destination. When it gets snowy, people come here for cross-country skiing and sledding.

Because the Interstate goes through the community, residents living closer to this major motorway may hear traffic passing on busier days.
