Escape to nature in the northern Windy City

As a neighborhood with abundant parkland on the north side of Chicago, it’s no wonder how North Park got its name. The community is home to nature lovers who like to live in the city and draws residents with its expansive metropolitan parks like the North Park Village Nature Center. Realtor Debbie Arcabascio of Baird & Warner Edgebrook is a longtime resident of the neighborhood for precisely that reason: “It’s like living in the forest,” she says. “All kinds of wildlife come by my window every day — deer, baby ducks. I’ve seen a baby fawn take its first steps off my balcony.”

North Park Village Nature Center

“The North Park Village Nature Center is one of the biggest draws to the area,” Arcabascio says. “It’s amazing. It’s a huge nature preserve right in the heart of the city.” She’s a member of the park’s award-winning North Park Village Garden Club and routinely tends to her plants in the community garden. The 46-acre park with birding and hiking trails is only one of several expansive outdoor spaces in the neighborhood. Peterson Park is a 23-acre wooded green space with a state-of-the-art gymnastics center and fieldhouse that hosts social clubs, and the 80-acre LaBagh Woods is a popular spot for picnics and birdwatching amongst its large oaks, hickories and maples.

Neighbors know each other in North Park

There are nearly endless cultural opportunities in a city as big as Chicago, but North Park residents don’t need to leave their neighborhood to find something to do. Peterson Park and Eugene Field Park offer opportunities to connect with the community, like senior social clubs, fitness classes, arts and crafts lessons and sports leagues for kids. The North Park Village Nature Center has a gardening club for adults and day camps for kids, and each March, they host a Maple Syrup Festival, where residents can learn how to collect sap from the trees and boil it into syrup.

The closest hospital is Kindred Hospital Chicago North, about two miles south of the neighborhood, and the closest airport is the Chicago O’Hare International Airport, about nine miles west. With bus and train lines throughout the city, Chicago was recently named one of the best cities in the world for mass transit by Time Out magazine. It was one of only two American cities to receive this title. There are lots of schools, and children. It's scary thinking about them getting hurt.

I am glad that I grew up in this area; it is nice that it is very accessible and there are some nice free things to do. The crime is a little bad but it is not that bad.
