A northwest suburb cleared for takeoff
Whether they’re hopping on the Blue Line train for their morning commute, running errands in Park Ridge or exploring the vast forest preserve next door, O’Hare residents can count on one common factor: the roar of jet planes overhead. This Chicago community area is just 4 miles east of its namesake, Chicago O’Hare International Airport. "I’ve helped lots of frequent business travelers, pilots and flight attendants purchase homes in O'Hare,” says Holly Wolack, Broker with @properties living and working out of the northwest suburbs. “But even if you don't travel for work, it's an incredible advantage for families, couples and solo travelers to be so close to what's arguably the best-connected airport in the world.” Apartments, condos and single-family homes share space with corporate complexes and a major L Line transit hub, which is walkable from home for many city commuters.
Living near major transportation hubs
Though some residents work within walking distance at Triangle Plaza, Presidents Plaza or the other sleek corporate complexes, many others take the Blue Line train each morning at Cumberland Station. These operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, running directly to Chicago O’Hare International Airport in about 10 minutes or through the Loop to downtown Chicago in about 40 minutes. Pace suburban bus stops also line Cumberland Avenue—some with shelters and seating—and O’Hare is centered on the junction of Illinois Routes 72 and 171 and Interstate 90, arterial roads connecting much of the Chicagoland area and beyond. Those who prefer to drive have a 4-mile trip to the airport and about 15 miles to downtown Chicago. Many of their essentials are closer to home, within Park Ridge and other suburbs. The closest hospital campus is Ascension Resurrection, about 2.5 miles away in Norwood Park.
Condos and single-family homes in northwest Chicago
Depending on their location, residents may look down their street and see the roar of highway traffic, corporate campuses like Triangle Plaza, local restaurants, or the thirteen gold domes of St. Joseph the Betrothed Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. The view from the sidewalk is often accentuated by the sight and roar of an airplane making its descent. The area west of Cumberland Avenue include tight blocks of triplex apartment buildings and larger complexes, along with brick condo communities with courtyards and metal balconies. Owners often sign on with perks like in-unit washers and dryers and assigned parking spaces. Units range in price from $100,000 to $360,000 depending on the number of rooms and include varying homeowners association fees depending on the building. Main roads are lined with sidewalks wide enough for strollers and dog walkers, leading past mowed lawns and small accent trees in the front yard and back alleyways where trash is collected. The rest of the area is full of ranch-style and split-level homes built in the 1960s and 1970s, often with 3 beds and baths and attached two-car garages. Prices range from $290,000 to $690,000, the higher end sitting in Park Ridge or Norwood Township zip codes. Suburbia sets in farther north of Interstate 90, with New Traditional or colonial-style homes sitting between $700,000 to $1.5 million. Selfreliance Federal Credit Union, next-door neighbors of St. Joseph’s, offers competitive mortgage rates to first-time home buyers and employs staff who speak Ukrainian and English. The business also donates funds each year to community organizations cemented in Chicago’s Ukrainian community.

Neighboring the Forest Preserves of Cook County
Though O’Hare has a heavy corporate and industry presence, residents can also walk right from their neighborhood streets to miles of hickory and oak trees. Paved and unpaved trail systems meander through Catherine Chevalier Woods, past three sheltered picnic groves, over marshes and along the winding Des Plaines River. This stretch is part of the 70,000-acre Forest Preserves of Cook County, a favorite in the northwest suburbs for hiking throughout the year and cross-country skiing during Illinois’ frosty winters. Grandparents Park is closer to home for condo residents, with a short path and playground renovated in 2014 as part of the Chicago Plays! Initiative. Even more playgrounds and ball fields can be found in nearby Park Ridge, like 7-acre Southwest Park, where local baseball and football leagues play, and families watch the planes fly in and out of the airport.
Residents of O'hare love the community at Grandparents' Park.

Eateries near home and shopping sprees in Rosemont
Amid numerous airport hotels, most local dining is fast, free of frills and geared toward travelers. O’Hare residents get more acquainted with the local scene at spots like neighborhood diner Mac’s, which has served just-off-the-griddle comfort fare since 1959 to both regulars and jetsetters. LeilaLove Patisserie Macarons Shop is hard to miss, with its baby pink pinstriped exterior and vibrant macaron towers in the windows. These locally owned restaurants form part of a commercial strip on Illinois Routes 72 alongside chains like Dunkin and the neighborhood Mariano’s grocery store. Dining and retail options also line north-to-south Cumberland Avenue, with Stefania's European Food Market anchoring the biggest shopping plaza with imported groceries from Eastern and Central Europe. Wolack points out that O'Hare also neighbors Rosemont, a Cook County village that doubles as a restaurant, retail and entertainment destination for Chicagoans. “Here you’ve got the Fashion Outlets of Chicago for reasonable prices on all sorts of designer brands,” Wolack says. “And the Parkway Bank Park Entertainment District, which has about a dozen high-end and casual bars and restaurants, plus Zanies Comedy Club, my favorite, and a dine-in movie theatre, bowling alley and indoor sky diving.” Residents are also 4 miles south of Uptown Park Ridge restaurants like airy, upscale Pennyville Station, a farm-to-table hotspot with creative cocktails.

Fireworks over Rosemont and Saint Joseph’s Uketoberfest
Besides bowling, standup comedy and skydiving, Rosemont’s Parkway Bank Park also hosts “Rockin’ in the Park,” a free summertime concert series. Visitors form lines to outside food and beverage tents on the great lawn before settling down for the performance, making sure to stick around for the post-show fireworks display. The parking lot behind St. Joseph the Betrothed Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church transforms during Uketoberfest, a two-day festival celebrating Ukrainian food, traditional dance and music.
