Outdoor dining and authentic multicultural groceries
Rogers Park has over 130 restaurants, coffee shops and cafes. Here, walking to lunch or dinner is an activity in itself, and a recent increase in outdoor dining options has led locals to adopt the lifestyle of hanging out in outdoor cafes. "During the pandemic, the neighborhood permanently shut down certain streets to create two different outdoor dining districts," Smola says. One of these, Jarvis Square, is best known for its charming cafes and authentic Italian food, but it also has events like live music on its patio. Several grocery stores are available throughout the neighborhood, and they specialize in a variety of cuisines, like Latin American and Caribbean Food at Rogers Park Fruit Market, kashruth kosher meat at Romanian and Mexican specialty items at Supermercado Chapala.Vintage courtyard buildings, two-flats and other Chicago-specific housing styles
In Rogers Park, "The housing styles vary," Smola says. "There are older homes built in the 1800s, but also newer constructions. There are several different Chicago-specific housing styles, like vintage courtyard buildings, which are large buildings with two- to three-bedroom units and 30 to 40 families living in them, and two-flats, which are almost like single-family living but there are two units in one building." The median price in Rogers Park is $210,000 overall and varies by housing style: $140,000 for a one-bedroom condo, around $200,000 for a two-bedroom condo, $300,000 for a townhouse and $580,000 for a single-family home. "For Chicago, it's relatively affordable," Smola says. The Glenwood Sunday Market and Artists of the Wall Festival
Rogers Park's weekly farmers market, the Glenwood Sunday Market, provides its residents with local, sustainable foods, and each summer, Loyola Park has the Artists of the Wall Festival." There's a giant wall along the beach that they paint white every year, and you can buy a spot and paint the wall," Smola says. Residents also enjoy proximity to Loyola University Chicago, which has NCAA Division I sports teams and national titles in men's basketball and volleyball, and a performing arts center with theatre, dance and music performances. "Rogers Park has a lot of events that keep the community engaged," Smola says.Walkability in Rogers Park
In Rogers Park, "You don't need a car to get around," Smola says. "It's really walkable. You can walk to grocery stores, playgrounds, cafes." Three āLā lines reach Rogers Park: Red, Yellow and Purple. There are four Red Line stations at Howard, Jarvis, Morse and Loyola, and the Yellow and Purple lines connect at Howard, the northernmost CTA rail stop in the city. CTA also has bus routes in Rogers Park, and Metra provides a commuter rail service. Rogers Park is about a 35-minute drive to O'Hare International Airport, and the nearest hospital, Ascension Saint Francis, is less than a mile away.Chicago Public Schools and Loyola University Chicago

Located on nearly 22 acres along Lake Michigan from Touhy Avenue to Loyola University, Loyola Park is the neighborhood's primary public green space. "I grew up going there and still go there all the time," Smola says. "Everyone just hangs out on the lake. All summer long, everyone's out there with their pets, and it's not just dogs. You'll see cats in strollers. There's a lady that's known in the neighborhood for walking around with a parrot on her shoulder. It's a really unique neighborhood."
