Lakefront neighborhood 10 miles south of downtown Chicago
With Lake Michigan as its eastern border, South Chicago sits about 10 miles southeast of The Loop and was once the location of a major steel manufacturer. From the late 19th century into the mid-20th century, the neighborhood was home to immigrants from Ireland, Eastern Europe, Italy and Scandinavia—with many working in the steel mill. “They moved to the south suburbs, and in the 1950s and 1960s, African Americans moved here, and they passed their houses onto the next generation,” says Shaena Flanagan, a broker with Coldwell Banker Realty. “Today, there’s a mixture of people living here.” Heading to downtown Chicago may be quicker via Interstate 90 or more scenic taking Lake Shore Drive.
Chicago-style bungalows abound in South Chicago
The houses in this neighborhood sit closer together on small lots. The streets are narrow and have many brick Chicago bungalows. They closely resemble Cape Cod-style houses in other parts of the country and are one-and-a-half stories with a full basement. Many have been remodeled, along with mid-20th-century Georgian Revival and ranch-style homes. The price for single-family homes generally ranges between $100,000 and $400,000. Properties requiring significant rehab work start have recently sold for as low as $35,000. While there are many apartments in the area, very few sell as condos, with recent sales ranging between $70,000 and $100,000. Two-flat buildings and other multi-family properties are fairly common and range from $50,000 to $450,000. The neighborhood contains more renters than homeowners by a ratio of 3-to-2. The area scores a 5 on the CAP crime score scale, slightly above the national average. Some violent crimes have a higher number.
In addition to Chicago style bungalows, South Chicago has an abundance of modern 1950's bungalows.

Parks by Lake Michigan
Steelworkers Park is near the site of the former U.S. Steel mill, which closed in 1992. The 16-acre site lets visitors enjoy nature in the city. Once part of the factory, an ore wall is now a community rock climbing wall. There are also many trees, walking paths and picturesque views of Lake Michigan. Rainbow Beach Park has a beach, community garden, basketball, tennis and handball courts and multiple baseball diamonds. “During warm weather, various leagues play there, and it’s always crowded,” Flanagan says. Norman’s Bistro on the Lake is open year-round, even if nobody is on the beach. The park also has the Rainbow Dunes Natural Area. Bird watchers have spotted over 250 species. Further inland, Eckersall Park has a playground, soccer fields and a full basketball court. Eckersall Stadium on the park’s south side is where various Chicago Public High School football teams play. Russell Square Park has indoor and outdoor recreation options. The indoor fitness center and gym offer cold-weather options for staying in shape, while outside, there are three baseball fields, a swimming pool and sand volleyball courts.
