Wrightwood has a suburban feel in Chicago city limits
Wrightwood is part of the greater Ashburn area in the Far Southwest Side of Chicago. It's right on the city limits and borders suburbs like Evergreen Park. Its location gives it a more suburban feel, but you still get some city conveniences. You can walk or take the bus to local parks, schools and restaurants. City taxes are also lower than those in the suburbs, so you can enjoy a lower cost of living in Wrightwood than the nearby suburbs, while still keeping that suburban environment that comes with being so close to them.
Cape Cod and Georgian homes often appear side by side in Wrightwood.

Single-family homes match suburb styles but city prices
Even though Wrightwood is still in the city, the neighborhood is mostly homeowners, so it feels more like the suburbs. Most houses are raised ranches, Cape Cods and Georgians. The look of the neighborhood also adds to the suburban atmosphere. Streets have small front yards with gardens, and most people park in detached garages behind homes and not along the street. Most properties cost around the upper $100,000s to the low $400,000s, which is about the same as the surrounding city neighborhoods and bordering suburbs. “The tax bracket is what sets us apart,” says broker Tamika Marks with Trademarks and Associates. “You get that Chicago address with the suburban feel, but you avoid the tax bleed.”
Cape Cod homes are common across Wrightwood streets.
Georgian homes are a common housing style in Wrightwood.

Neighborhood and community green spaces
Hayes Park is Wrightwood’s neighborhood park. Its fieldhouse has an indoor pool, basketball courts and a fitness center. Outside, there are sports fields, a playground and walking paths. The neighborhood also borders Dan Ryan Woods, a forest preserve spanning over 250 acres. It has walking and biking paths that turn into cross-country ski trails in the winter. Kids like to sled down the hill. Lots of people come here to host local parties and get-togethers.

Wrightwood's casual dining scene
Wrightwood’s dining scene is much more casual than other neighborhoods. “It’s things like Taco Bell or the mom-and-pop restaurant, but if you’re looking for a steakhouse, you’ve got to go a suburb over, like Oak Lawn,” Marks says. Some local options include:
Nicky's Family Restaurant and Pancake House, a diner known for its ham off the bone and biscuits
Starlight Restaurant, another diner with plenty of breakfast and burger options
D&D's Place, an old-fashioned donut shack with a walk-up order window
For picking up groceries, you’ll have to go outside the neighborhood. “It’s almost a food desert, but not quite,” Marks says. “We do have one grocery store in Ashburn, but the others are in Burbank and Oak Lawn.” Westport Commons Shopping Center is Ashburn’s, which has a Pete’s Fresh Market. Evergreen Marketplace in Evergreen Park has a Meijer and a Walmart Supercenter. There’s also an Aldi right across the city border in Evergreen Park.
Meijer in Evergreen Park offers a deli counter with a wide selection of prepared foods.
Pacheco's Tacos in Wrightwood offers affordable Mexican dishes with traditional flavors.

Taking the bus around the area and the train to The Loop
While you can walk to things like schools and parks, you need a car to get to other places, like some of the grocery stores. Buses run along the major streets like 79th, Western Avenue and Kedzie Avenue. Commuters can take the bus to the Wrightwood Metra station, located just outside the neighborhood in Ashburn. It’s on the SWS line and goes to The Loop. Marks says some people take the bus to a nearby L station and take that train into downtown instead for a more flexible commute. Downtown Chicago is about 14 miles away, so either 40 minutes by car or an hour by train.
Local public and private schools in Wrightwood
Chicago Public Schools serves the neighborhood. It’s a school-choice district, so even though there are a couple of options located within walking distance, you can apply to attend other schools outside your zone. For a private option, St. Rita of Cascia High School is a highly rated all-boys Catholic school around the corner from homes in Wrightwood.
