Pride is strong in the Detroit suburb of Clinton Township. Whether it’s protecting the Clinton River, embellishing the high-profile business strip of Gratiot Avenue or helping organizations and businesses facilitate potential development projects, the township takes collaboration seriously. But that doesn’t mean that the state’s most populous township is all work and no play. In fact, it’s just the opposite. The community works tirelessly to maintain and improve the township, both aesthetically and structurally, so residents don’t have to venture too far outside the township for business or pleasure.

While the average price of a home in Clinton Township is $167,000, most houses are valued between $85,0000 and $600,000, with many floating between $200,000 and $300,000. The state’s median home value is $235,000. College-focused education
In addition to the lessons learned at this town’s historic parks, township residents have extensive opportunities for public education. Five K-12 school districts serve township residents and more than 14,000 students are enrolled in an array of degree programs at the township’s campus of Macomb Community College. Many of those students also enroll in the satellite program for Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Students attend schools such as Clinton Valley Elementary School – rated B by Niche – as well as the B-rated Algonquin Middle School and the B-plus-rated Chippewa Valley High School. Chippewa Valley High School has an Advanced Placement rate of 35% and a graduation rate of 97%.

Family fun at the park
“Clinton Township is one those places where the importance of family is obvious,” says Norm Trotter, a Realtor with Mr. & Mrs. Real Estate. “Just visit on a warm day and you’ll see all the evidence you need.” Trotter is talking about the dozen parks, splash pad, dog park, sledding hill, huge open-air mall and the highly recreational Clinton River as some of the most popular places for outdoor activities.
Each park has its own personality and amenities. Civic Center Park has a sledding hill for winter fun, as well as pickleball, basketball, volleyball, shuffleboard and bocce ball courts for year-round recreation. This 74-acre park also houses a dog park and splash pad for pups and tots. New residents and visitors are drawn to the broad park system and the Clinton River, where the branches of the river join to offer miles of river for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. There are also opportunities for education at the park, which contains the town’s Historical Village. The village includes Moravian Hall – which houses artifacts from the 1880s - and the Williams Log Cabin, which has been refurbished as a living history museum. The Senior Adult Life Center also is located inside the Civic Center, next to one of the three branches of the Clinton-Macomb Public Library.

Chocolate shopping in Clinton
Undoubtedly, some students got to extend their learning opportunities with sweet field trips to tour Sanders Chocolate & Ice Cream Shop. Since 1875, the beloved Michigan candymaker has been synonymous with Detroit. At one point there were more than 50 Michigan locations passing out sweet original confections like the bumpy cake, creampuffs, ice cream sodas and of course their specially made chocolates. Hard times forced the closure of a handful of Sanders’ locations, but another Michigan candymaker, Morley Candy, saved Sanders from disappearing completely by absorbing the candymaker while maintaining two distinct products. Sanders draws tourists and residents to the facility for free factory tours where they can watch the chocolate treat being created – and of course, taste a free sample at the candymaker’s gift shop.
That’s not the only place to get a free chocolate sample in Clinton Township. Should one ask nicely, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory may oblige. It’s among the 90 stores at the township’s open-air mall, The Mall at Partridge Creek. The popular retail area has a laid-back, pet-friendly vibe. In addition to stores like L.L. Bean, LOFT and Aerie, the mall has a multi-screen movie theater as well as a few chain restaurants like Brio Tuscan Grill, P.F. Chang's Chinese Bistro and Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant. Cooper’s Hawk is the perfect place to end dinner with – more chocolate. The house-made truffles are just the sweet ending gourmands may cherish.
