A golf course community 5 miles east of downtown Columbia

In Old Hawthorne, residents can watch locals playing golf from their backyards. A gated community, Old Hawthorne was designed in 2007 with the sport in mind. Residential streets cut through the course, offering views of rolling greens and tree-lined fairways. Although anchored by a golfing lifestyle, Old Hawthorne also attracts non-golfers, according to Ariana Schneider, the community’s membership and marketing director. “We have a portion of our community that is 55 and up, and we have a lot of kids in the neighborhood, as well. It’s definitely diverse, which is not always what you think of when you think of a country club dynamic,” she says. The Club at Old Hawthorne serves as the community’s central recreational hub and has fostered a tight-knit atmosphere, according to Schnieder. It hosts annual events and even has a restaurant. “Old Hawthorne feels like an oasis, with the club at the heart of it,” Schnieder says. “There’s pretty much always something going on.”

Custom-built homes and spacious yards

Most of Old Hawthorne's custom-built homes sit on over a quarter-of-an-acre of land, flanking curving sidewalks and streets that often end in cul-de-sacs. Prices largely depend on the property’s size and whether or not it boasts golf course views. Homes that are under 3,000 square feet typically cost between $400,000 and $600,000, while larger designs can range from $600,000 to $1 million. The subdivision is also home to Linkside, a 55+ community of ADA-accessible single-family homes, which cost between $450,000 and $700,000; and condos that range from $350,000 to $500,000. In 2021, Old Hawthorne expanded by 124 acres and began offering plots for sale. Parcels typically start at $100,000 and can go up to $300,000. All Old Hawthorne residents should expect to pay a social membership fee for access to the club as well as monthly HOA fees. The HOA covers everything from yard maintenance to snow removal in the community.

The Club at Old Hawthorne: Golfing, swimming and more

“Our community takes golf very seriously,” says Max Fredricks, Old Hawthorne's head golf professional. The 18-hole private golf course features bentgrass tees and water hazards. “What’s unique is our practice facility. It’s one of the largest in the state and is probably our No. 1 amenity,” Fredericks says. The practice facility spans over 20 acres and has enough space for 50 players to practice at a time. In June, the course hosts The Stampede, a men’s event, which Golf.com calls ‘America’s greatest membership-guest tournament.’ It also hosts some of the University of Missouri’s golfing programs. Besides the course, the club has an eight-lane outdoor pool where residents of all ages can take swim lessons. Near the pool, there are also pickleball and tennis courts, and the club hosts practices and tournaments for both racquet sports. There is also a fitness center, which provides a selection of exercise classes.

The Bar & Grill at Old Hawthorne

Featuring a patio with pristine golf course views, The Bar & Grill at Old Hawthorne has become an integral aspect of the clubhouse. Some nights, there’s live music on the patio, while other nights, there are homemade pasta specials. The restaurant also serves up everything from burgers to filet mignon, as well as desserts like apple crisp cheesecake. Unique to the restaurant are the monthly neighborhood street dinners. “It’s an opportunity for residents to come to dine with the neighbors on their streets. The chef will even do a special menu for them,” Schneider says. “We also have a wine society that we do in-house. We bring out different winemakers, and the chef has a custom menu.” In 2022, the clubhouse also added a pool bar. “It definitely has a vacation-resort-style feel. It’s mainly for drinks and snacks,” Schneider says. For more dining options, most residents head towards the city center, and for groceries, there is a Schnucks location just 4 miles north of the community.

The Independence Day Bash, Hawthorne Halloween and more

The clubhouse hosts everything from trivia nights to football watch parties. There are also annual events like the Independence Day Bash. With a fireworks show and a Ferris wheel, the bash has become one of residents’ favorite events, according to Schneider. In October, the clubhouse hosts Hawthorne Halloween. Here, children come dressed in costumes, balloon artists make intricate designs and there are even opportunities to pet a snake. Schneider says the holiday season is the club’s busiest time of the year as there are gingerbread-making parties and chef-run cooking workshops.

Columbia Public Schools

Students can attend Cedar Ridge Elementary, which receives a B rating from Niche and takes its name from the abundance of cedar trees in the area. The school boasts partnerships with companies like River Region Credit Union for learning and funding opportunities. From there, students head to C-plus-rated Oakland Middle, which features both a kindness club and an industrial technology club. To finish up their secondary education, most students attend Muriel W. Battle High, known as Battle High. Niche gives the school a B rating and ranks it as Boone County’s No. 3 public high school. The school’s name honors Dr. Muriel Battle, an educator who advocated for desegregation within Columbia Public Schools.

Drives to The District, University of Missouri and more

Since there are no bus stops within a 3-mile radius, Old Hawthorne is a car-dependent community. Downtown Columbia, known as The District, is about 5 miles away via East Broadway. This route also offers connections to major employers like the University of Missouri and Boone Hospital Center, both of which are about 5 miles away. For other commutes, Interstate 70 is just north, and U.S. Route 63 is to the east. Route 63 offers connections to Missouri’s capital, Jefferson City, 30 miles south, and to the Columbia Regional Airport, 11 miles south.
