Lake Murray, two rivers and several shopping malls are big draws
St. Andrews is catching up with the rest of the Capital City. This northern suburban neighborhood is just a hop-skip-jump over the Broad River and Interstate 20. It’s 10 miles away from downtown Columbia and the University of South Carolina while also neighboring some of the largest commercial shopping centers in the area. This medley of comfortable Southern living with convenient access to city-like amenities is a big draw for homebuyers, says Ashley McKee, Realtor with Coldwell Banker and longtime local. Outside of all the shopping fuss are plenty of outdoor green spaces stretching out along the Broad and Saluda rivers. Plus, the sprawling Lake Murray isn’t much farther north. St. Andrews' CAP Index Crime Score is relatively high when compared to the national average of 4. With a score of 7 out of 10, there are several programs that the Columbia Police Department has put into place. One of them includes Ceasefire Columbia, which aims to reduce gun violence and crime by providing valuable resources to repeat offenders.

Competitively priced homes on the outskirts of the Capital City
Among the biggest draws for homebuyers to St. Andrews is the affordability compared to surrounding areas like Irmo and downtown Columbia. Ranch-style and bungalow homes with vinyl or brick exteriors are priced between the mid-$100,000s and low $200,000s and often feature small front porches and patios. Homes that offer four or more bedrooms and over 2,000 square feet can see prices between $250,000 and $300,000.

Magnet programs and South Carolina Virtual Charter School offer plenty of options
Pinegrove Elementary earns a C score on Niche. Students can then attend St. Andrews Middle School, which shares a C-minus Niche grade with Columbia High School, the city’s first public high school, founded in 1884. Magnet programs in national defense are offered there, including civil air patrol and aerospace. Students can apply to the South Carolina Virtual Charter School for a fully virtual option. While all classes are taught online, there are clubs available to students, and they can still participate in sports at their closest brick-and-mortar school.

Riverfront walks and Lake Murray aren't far from home
In the heart of the neighborhood is St. Andrews Park, a hub for quick outdoor recreation. The community center has a small gym with some exercise equipment, along with an outdoor pool. The soccer and baseball fields are home to recreational league groups, and the tennis courts light up once the sun goes down. Kids can enjoy the partially shaded playground in the summer. The Saluda Riverwalk, a 7.3-mile trail, can be found at the southern end of St. Andrews. There are plenty of backpacking, birding and dog-walking opportunities year-round. Canoe and kayak launches are also available for getting out on the water to fish. Columbia Canal and Riverfront Walk is just 7 miles away near the South Carolina State Museum. “It’s a really popular spot over that way,” says Becki Ashby, a broker at Re/Max Purpose Driven. “And the city is putting a lot of funds towards some new developments; it’s definitely well taken care of.” Developments include the creation of more pedestrian walkways and green spaces along Greene Street, which connects USC with the waterfront. Fishing and boating at Lake Murray is easy when it's only 10 miles away. Between Yacht Cove and multiple campsites, there are plenty of additional spaces for weekend recreation farther from downtown Columbia.

St. Andrews is located near several shopping centers along Broad River Road
A Food Lion is located at the southern end of Broad River Road, toward the Riverwalk. From there, fast-food chains and a few local restaurants are dotted along each side of Broad River Road. Among them is the Bistreaux by Fleur de Licious, which serves up New Orleans-style food. The owners started the business in a food truck in 2017 and eventually opened the brick-and-mortar spot in 2022. The fried green tomatoes topped with crawfish and a Cajun cream sauce are especially popular. Broad River Road connects to Harbison Boulevard, which McKee Thompson describes as a large, popular shopping area with tons of restaurants. Major retailers, including T.J. Maxx, Old Navy and Target, surround big-box grocery stores like Publix and Walmart. Its neighboring shopping mall is Columbiana Centre, home to Dave & Buster’s, a movie theater and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse.
